1968 erschien Status Quos erster Hit "Pictures of Matchstick Men" und das Debüt-Album "Picturesque Matchstickable Messages from the Status Quo" folgte kurz danach. Die Single erreichte Platz 7 in Großbritannien und ist nach wie vor die einzige große Hit-Single der Band in den USA, wo sie Platz 12 erreichte. Das Album enthält mehrere Cover-Songs, darunter "Green Tambourine" von The Lemon Pipers und "Spicks and Specks" von The Bee Gees. Die aus South London stammenden Alan Lancaster (Bass) und Francis Rossi (Gitarre) gehören zur Original-Besetzung und gelten als die Gründer von Status Quo. Früher bekannt als The Spectres und später umbenannt in Traffic oder Traffic Jam, entschieden sie sich 1967 für Status Quo als finalen Bandnamen. In den folgenden Jahren kamen John Coghlan (Schlagzeug), Roy Lynes (Keyboard) und Rick Parfitt (Gitarre) hinzu.
