MAGIC CARPET w/ CAB CALLOWAY SHOW #16 & COUNT BASIE SHOW #15 from THE ARMED FORCES RADIO SERVICE on a 16" TRANSCRIPTION DISC.
CAB WAS RECORDED LIVE TOWARD THE END OF WORLD WAR II AT THE NEW ZANZIBAR CAFE ON 49th ST IN NEW YORK CITY & THE COUNT WAS RECORDED LIVE AT THE BLUE ROOM IN THE HOTEL LINCOLN WEST OF BROADWAY IN NEW YORK CITY.
"Operation Magic Carpet" was the movement home of the eight million American service personnel stationed overseas at the end of World War II. Beginning with the European Theatre in May 1945 and continuing with the Pacific Theatre in September 1945, the Merchant Marine and Navy shipped service men and women home aboard passenger, cargo and military vessels. The movement was augmented by the Air Transport Command of the Army Air Forces and Naval Air Transport Service, who flew priority wounded personnel home. "Operation Magic Carpet" was essentially completed by December 1946.
In July 1945, the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS) started a new series of 15-minute programs culled from big band sustaining remote broadcasts around the country and named the series "Magic Carpet" in honor of the ongoing operation to bring service personnel home. The comprehensive history of "Magic Carpet" series has been made possible by the foresight of living and deceased producers and collectors who have saved the documented history of AFRS and, in particular, many of the "Magic Carpet" transcription discs.
THIS AUCTION IS FOR THE 15 ( Count Basie ) & 16 ( CAB CALLOWAY ) DISC ISSUED BY THE ARMED FORCES RADIO SERVICES. PLEASE NOTE IT IS A TRANSCRIPTION DISC MEASURING 16". SELECTIONS ON THE CAB CALLOWAY PROGRAM ARE AS FOLLOWS: SHOW OPENS AND ENDS WITH "MINNIE THE MOOCHER: CAB SINGS DAWN TIME CAB SINGS I SHOULD CARE DOTTIE SAUNTER (sp?) SINGS TABBY THE CAT THE BAND PLAYS RUSSIAN LULLABY THE COUNT BASIE PROGRAM STARTS AND ENDS WITH ONE O'CLOCK JUMP. THE FIRST FULL NUMBER IS RED BANK BOOGIE THE NEXT NUMBER IS EARL WARREN SINGING "I WALKED IN" .... FOLLOWED BY A BAND NUMBER --- "ON THE UPBEAT" .... FOLLOWED BY AN TUNE THAT THE ANNOUNCER SEEMS TO SAY IS "FOREIGN TIME" CONDITION OF THIS DISC: THE ONLY REAL FLAW IS THAT ON THE CAB CALLOWAY SIDE ... THERE IS A NOISY START FOR THE FIRST 30 SECONDS. .... OTHERWISE ... VERY GOOD WITH MODERATE USE. NO NOISY SCRATCHES, NO DUG OUT GROOVES, NO REPEATING FLAWS. RATE THIS ONE AS AN "M" * WITH THE NOTED FLAW ON THE CAB CALLOWAY SIDE.

N --- LOOKS LIKE NEW or DEALER STOCK BUT WITH THE ULTRA SLIGHTEST SIGN OF WEAR.
M --- LOOKS LIKE IT JUST CAME OUT OF THE STORE BUT HAS A FEW TICKS THAT KEEP IT FROM PERFECT
E --- EXCELLENT BUT NOT PERFECT. SHOWS A FEW FLAWS.
VG ( very good ) --- SHOWS FLAWS. HAS SURFACE WEAR AND SOME SURFACE NOISE SHOULD BE EXPECTED. NO NASTY SCRATCHES, NEEDLE DROPS, RIM CHIPS, OR OTHER MAJOR PROBLEMS.
GOOD --- ACTUALLY, A FAIRLY USED RECROD THAT IS NEARING THE END OF ITS USEFUL LIFE.
FAIR or GOOD --- NOT MUCH OF EITHER. BUY IT UNTIL YOU CAN FIND A BETTER COPY.
