Victor Herbert (1859-1924): Panamericana: Morceau Characteristique/ March of the Toys fr Babes in Toyland

This piece was written for the Pan-American Exposition, held in Buffalo, NY in 1901.  It was first performed at the Exposition on Oct. 14 in the Temple of Music.  The composer said the following about his piece of music:

"The piece is of the more popular order and will make a hit. The first part is "supposed" to be "Indian" the second part "ragtime" (modern America) and the trio "Cuban" or Spanish character."

Robert Hood Bowers (24 May 1877 - 29 December 1941) was an American composer, conductor and musical director of operettas and stage musicals, and a conductor and musical director for radio. He composed the musical scores for some of the most popular silent movies, including Aloma of the South Seas and A Daughter of the Gods.

BiographyRobert Hood Bowers was born and raised in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. He was the eldest son of Ellen Graham Heyser and Oliver C. Bowers (a district attorney of Franklin County, and nominee for the Democratic Party for Pennsylvania's 17th congressional district for the 1904 elections). When Bowers was 14, he went to the Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, graduating in 1896. He started working as head of the Musical Department of Cheltenham Military Academy. At the same time, he continued his musical studies first with Constantin von Sternberg and later with Frederick Grant Gleason at the Conservatory of Chicago,[1] where he won the gold medal in 1902.[2] He married Virginia Belving on September 16 1905.[3] Their only son was also called Robert Hood Bowers (born in 1906, he became a Professor of English at the University of Florida.[4])

Robert Hood Bowers composed songs, school music, operettas and musicals. He worked as a conductor for Victor Herbert for five years.[5], and as a conductor at the radio stations WMCA, WEAF and WOR, as well as for the Columbia Phonograph Company. He also composed dances in an 'oriental' style for modern dance pioneer Ruth St. Denis and music for comic operas of Jesse Louis Lasky.[6] He was employed at the School of Radio Technique at the Rockefeller Center, as the head of the musical department for five years before his death. He died in New York in 1941.[7]

[edit] ReceptionHis score for A Daughter of the Gods, which was the most expensive movie made until then, was created especially for the movie, which was then unusual. The score was explicitly mentioned in the advertisements for the movie[8] and was described in 1921 as the most memorable up to that time,[9] and as "a high point of motion picture music".[10]

Quick note on grading:

The Grade (Excellent to Fair, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately

When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to F), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise.
"SUPERQUIET" is basically noiseless, like a vinyl pressing.
"VERY QUIET" is an exceptionally quiet record for a given pressing.
"Quiet" is a record that is a great example without undue noise for a give pressing.

These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment.

Records will be packed safely between corrugated cardboard in a sturdy box with plenty of padding for safe shipment.

Shipment is usually Media Mail, unless another service is requested. Shipping is at your risk, I will be happy to insure items at your cost.

I charge actual postage plus a small fee for packing materials

Prices below are for regular 78 rpm records. Up to about 5 records, I will ship Edison Discs for the same rates. Albums from Album Sets count as 1 record. Above that and for international shipments, it will be actual weight plus a small packing charge (1-3$ depending on size of shipment)

MANY MORE RECORDS: Don't worry. I safely ship 40 - 50 pounds of records double boxed in moving boxes, and even then Media Mail will probably not exceed 30$.
