Condition: VERY GOOD PLUS PLUS, shiny and undamaged. 2 x 2mm tiny blunt scuffs,

Augustrello Affre, one of the chief 19th century exponents of Faust, is here heard in a portion of the “Love Duet” from Act Three as well as the “Final Trio.”

AFFRE, AGUSTARELLO [te] (Saint-Chinian, 1858–Cagnes sur Mer, 1931) A great exponent of the French tradition of grand opéra, Agustarello Affre held his own with Escalaïs, de Reszke, Scaremberg, Muratore, and Franz in a career that lasted two decades. After studying in Toulouse and at the Paris Conservatory National, Affre made his debut at the Paris Opera in 1890 as Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor with Nellie Melba. He soon claimed leading parts in Les Huguenots, Guillaume Tell, Aida, Faust, Sigurd, L’Africaine, and Roméo et Juliette. At the Paris Opera, he created Zarastra in Massenet’s Le mage and was the first Canio. Despite never singing at the Opéra-Comique, he made guest appearances in Lyons, Marseilles, Brussels, London, Havana, and San Francisco. In 1912 he appeared in New Orleans and the following year was appointed the director of the company. A prolific recording artist, Affre recorded a large and varied repertoire for Zonophone, G & T, Columbia, Pathé, and Odéon. His bright voice recorded well for the early gramophone but often the acoustic process emphasized a strained and edgy quality that may not have been so apparent in the theater.

Agussol, Pauline, Sopran, * 29.11.1863 Toulon, † (?); die oft angegebenen Vornamen Charlotte oder Marie waren Beinamen der Künstlerin, die sie nie bei ihrem professionellen Singen gebrauchte. Sie studierte bis 1887 am Conservatoire National von Paris und debütierte an der Pariser Grand Opéra 1888 als Page Urbain in den »Hugenotten« von Meyerbeer. 1888 sang sie dort in einer glanzvollen Premiere von Gounods »Roméo et Juliette« mit Adelina Patti, Jean und Édouard de Reszke, Jean-François Delmas und Léon Melchissèdec zusammen die Rolle des Stéphano. Sie verlegte sich hauptsächlich auf Partien aus dem Bereich der Soubrette, namentlich auf Travestie-Rollen. 1893 sang sie an der Grand Opéra die Waltraute in der französischen Erstaufführung der »Walküre«, 1895 den Hirtenknaben in der ersten Aufführung des »Tannhäuser« nach der unglücklichen Premiere von 1861. 1899 sang sie dort den Ascagne in der Premiere von »La Prise de Troie« von Berlioz. Später war sie an der Grand Opéra als Interpretin kleinerer und Comprimario-Rollen tätig.Insgesamt ist sie während zwanzig Jahren (bis etwa 1910) an der Grand Opéra aufgetreten. Bühnenpartien: Jemmy in Rossinis »Wilhelm Tell«, Siebel im »Faust« von Gounod, Inez in »La Favorite« von Donizetti, Colombe in »Ascanio« von Saint-Saëns, Fatima in »Zaïre« von Véronge de la Nux, Hilde in »Sigurd« von Reyer, Myrtale in »Thaïs« von Massenet, Beltis in »Le Fils de l'Étoile« von Erlanger, Waldvogel im »Siegfried«, Priesterin in »Aida«.

Zahlreiche Schallplatten, beginnend 1901 mit Aufnahmen auf G & T, dann auf AGPA, Zonophone, Beka (Paris 1906), Odeon und Favorite, die letzten von 1906. Darunter finden sich viele Ensemble-Szenen.

Quick note on grading:

The Grade (Excellent to Fair, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately, when prefaced with "HOWEVER" or "BUT" they will be significant.

When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to F), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise.
"SUPERQUIET" is basically noiseless, like a vinyl pressing.
"VERY QUIET" is an exceptionally quiet record for a given pressing.
"Quiet" is a record that is a great example without undue noise for a given pressing.

These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment.

Records will be packed safely between corrugated cardboard in a sturdy box with plenty of padding for safe shipment.

Shipment is usually Media Mail, unless another service is requested. Shipping is at your risk, I will be happy to insure items at your cost.
