1902 G&T / 1904 Victor Pressing of LA Mia Canzone, Enrico Caruso. Early Monarch Red Seal. Rather rare Victor Pressing
Recorded on December 1 1902 at the speed of 67.92 rpm. So very slow!
This recording session followed a bigger on the day before on Nov 30th. Only two records came from this session. It seems many of the recordings made of Caruso in 1902 by the Gramophone and Typewriter had somewhat clumsy nature to them. As they were rushed and often Caruso and the pianist Cottone were performing at different speeds. You can hear that on this recording, it is fascinating to hear. This song is rather rushed and every now and then the pianist Cottone hits a wrong note. It is also interesting to note the much more professional recording sessions that would follow in 1904 onward. There is something special with these very early discs. This disc is from 1904, early enough to have both Victor numbers on the dead wax. 5011 in its 1903 incarnation and 91010 as the 5000 series were changed in Oct 1903 to the 91000 one.
This record considering its age is in very good condition. It starts a little rough for 10 seconds, clears up and plays remarkably well. I am guessing a larger stylus would make a big difference, and my largest is 3mm. The voice stills comes through with very good clarity. One has to remember it was recorded 120 years ago and this pressing is 118 years old. All in all a fine recording. Like all recordings I sell from my collection, it will be carefully packed in a new box.
