In 1903, Enrico Caruso recorded titles for the Anglo-Italian Commerce Company in Milan, Italy.
Next, the France's Pathé Company took over the AICC--this is how Pathe obtained Caruso's cylinder masters.
Here are two of the three Caruso Cylinders issued on 78 rpm record by the Collector's Record Shop New York.
Pathé-AICC cylinders & discs, Milano 1903-10?
84003 Tu non mi vuoi più bene (Pini-Corsi)
84006 Huguenots (Meyerbeer): Qui sotto il ciel
The label hopefully states "Originally recorded on Cylinder about 1899 to 1900"
Transfer is good, speed is too high.
Collector's Record Shop Release No. 6
Jack Caidin's Collector's Record Shop on 7th ave and 54th New York, was an important place for record collectors. Edward J Smith got his start there and issued in 1938 several custom recordings by Enrico Caruso Jr.
Through contacts with old time singers, the CRS was able to obtain rare tests and unique recordings, which were issued on the shop's own label.
Enrico Caruso
b. 25/02/1873 in Naples, Italy
d. 02/08/1921 in Naples, Italy
Since Enrico Caruso came from a poor family he was only with great difficulty able to afford the study of singing with Guglielmo Vergine in Naples. Caruso was, beyond doubt, the best known singing personality of his time. His voice was originally a lyric tenor, but capable of the most dramatic climaxes. His phenomenal tone production, the smoothness of his registers, the nobility of his acting and singing style are even today to be marvelled at on more than 200 records.
