Great early G&T  recording of WILHELM HESCH a deep dark bass

the principal Bass Soloist under Gustav Mahler's VIENNA OPERA managment

Hesch was a real “black” bass of great size, wide range, and flexibility, with good diction.

Condition: EXCELLENT MINUS faint needle run first 1cm on Daughter, plays very quiet light fuzziness 1 spot of light distortion at end/ Daugther plays E- quiet some ticks in intro. Run causes rare mild clicks, 2 spots of fuzziness at end

A GREAT RECORD

Hermine Kittel (December 2, 1879 – April 7, 1948) was an Austrian contralto from Vienna. She studied singing with Amalie Materna in Vienna. She made her operatic debut in 1897 in Ljubljana. Kittle first sang under Gustav Mahler at the Vienna Hofoper (Vienna State Opera) and later premiered in a revision of Ariadne auf Naxos. She sang at the Bayreuth Festival in 1902 and 1908, where she sang Erda in Der Ring des Nibelungen. She also sang at the Salzburg Festival, where she often played Marcellina in The Marriage of Figaro.

She was married to opera singer Alexander Haydter, her brother Karl Kittel was a conductor.

Wilhelm HESCH (Vilém Hes) [bs] (3 July 1860 – 4 January 1908] studied in Prague and made his debut in 1880 in Brno, where Slezak, Jeritza, Pohlner, and Demuth all began their careers. Arriving at the Hofoper in 1896 via Prague and Hamburg, he performed 60 roles spanning the entire repertory from Mozart to Wagner, with 14 local premieres including Smetana’s The Bartered Bride and Dalibor; Tchaikovsky’s Evgenij Onegin and Iolanta; Saint-Saëns’s ËSamson et Dalila; and Siegfried Wagner’s Der Bärenhäuter. Hesch was a real “black” bass of great size, wide range, and flexibility, with good diction. He was also a fine actor, but not really successful in declamatory parts like those of Wagner, though he sang them often enough. Incidently, his second wife was the daughter of his tenor-colleague Fritz Schrödter who is also included in this edition. Hesch recorded for Berliner, G&T, Odeon, Columbia, and Beka.

Grete Forst (August 18, 1878 – June 1, 1942) was an Austrian soprano.[1]

Born Margarete Feiglstock to a Jewish family in Vienna, Forst made her operatic debut in Cologne in 1900 in the title role of Lucia di Lammermoor Three years later, made her Vienna State Opera debut in the same role and was made a member of the company by Gustav Mahler.[2] In 1908 she sang in the premiere of Karl Goldmark's Ein Wintermärchen with Leopold Demuth.

She remained in Vienna singing coloratura roles such as Olympia, Queen of the Night, Oscar, and Fiordiligi, as well as lyric soprano roles such as Cio-Cio-San. After she retired in 1911 upon her marriage to banker Johann Schuschny, she continued her career as a concert singer and teacher in Vienna for many years. She had one child, a son, Fritz Schuschny.[3]

She converted to Catholicism in 1940, but on May 27, 1942 she was placed in a transport to the Maly Trostenets extermination camp in Belorussia where she was murdered on June 1, 1942.[4]

Quick note on grading:

The Grade (Excellent to Fair, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately

When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to F), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise.
"SUPERQUIET" is basically noiseless, like a vinyl pressing.
"VERY QUIET" is an exceptionally quiet record for a given pressing.
"Quiet" is a record that is a great example without undue noise for a give pressing.

These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment.

Records will be packed safely between corrugated cardboard in a sturdy box with plenty of padding for safe shipment.

Shipment is usually Media Mail, unless another service is requested. Shipping is at your risk, I will be happy to insure items at your cost.

I charge actual postage plus a small fee for packing materials

MANY MORE RECORDS: Don't worry. I safely ship 40 - 50 pounds of records double boxed in moving boxes, and even then Media Mail will probably not exceed 30$.
