Paul Bender (* 28. July 1875 in Driedorf , Westerwald ; † 25. November 1947 in Munich ) was an internationally successful opera singers of the Register Bass .

The son of a Protestant pastor began his vocal training in addition to the study of medicine in Berlin. His musical teachers were Luise Ress and Baptist Hoffmann . As early as 1900 gave Paul Bender his stage debut at the Opera House in Wroclaw. In 1903 he then moved to the Munich Court Opera , where he remained until the end of his career. So he was able to celebrate his 40th anniversary as an ensemble member in September 1943rd Overall, he was in over 2000 performances on stage.

Paul Bender sang during his time in Munich virtually all significant bass parts and joined in some performances also as heroic baritone. His repertoire included a total of no less than 118 games. Numerous world premieres were held with the participation. For example, those of Le donne curiose ( The Curious Women ) in 1903 and I quattro rusteghi ( The four ruffians ) in 1906, both of Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari . At the first performance of Palestrina ( Hans Pfitzner ) he shone in 1917 in Munich Prinzregententheater as Pope Pius V. Other premieres were The Ghost Sonata by Julius Weismann (1930), The Heart of Hans Pfitzner (1931) and The Moon of Carl Orff (1939).

Already since 1902 Paul Bender was repeated guest at the Richard Wagner Festival in Bayreuth. Guest performances in Théàtre de la Monnaie Brussels (1910), at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées Paris (1914), at the Vienna court, or Staatsoper (1916-17), at the Covent Garden Opera London (1910-1914) and at the City Theatre Zurich (1915) ensured his reputation, so he 1922-1927 and to the Metropolitan Opera was founded in New York. 1926 Bender was at the Salzburg Festival as a guest, 1938 and 1939, he joined in the performances of the Ring des Nibelungen by Richard Wagner in the La Scala on.

A great passion Paul Bender, who in 1907 for the Royal Bavarian Chamber Singer was appointed, [1] was the concert and Lieder singing. As balladeer he succeeded by Eugen Gura celebrated. Neither in the opera, even at such scenes to Bender left alone on his impressive voice. Him the acting element was important always. How far did his facial presence can be seen in the fact that he in 1919 also in the significant expressionist silent film nerves of Robert Reinert played a major role. (The film addressed the misery of that postwar era so impressive that there were scenes of despair in the audience and the work was banned.)

The singer was until shortly before his death on stage. Especially in the '30s and' 40s he worked as a professor at the Munich Academy of Music (now part of the University of Music and Theatre ). His students included Friedrich Dalberg and Hans Hopf . Bender was married to the soprano Paula Brand, who gave up her career after marriage. His grave is at the Munich Waldfriedhof grave situation 110-W. 13 [2] [3] [4]

Quick note on grading:

The Grade (Excellent to Fair, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately

When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to F), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise.
"SUPERQUIET" is basically noiseless, like a vinyl pressing.
"VERY QUIET" is an exceptionally quiet record for a given pressing.
"Quiet" is a record that is a great example without undue noise for a give pressing.

These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment.

Multiple item shipping: I am happy to combine items for shipment in one parcel.

Records will be packed safely between corrugated cardboard in a sturdy box with plenty of padding for safe shipment.

Shipment is usually Media Mail, unless another service is requested. Shipping is at your risk, I will be happy to insure items at your cost.

I charge actual postage plus a small fee for packing materials

As always, I guarantee your satisfaction. If you don't like the item, just return it, and I will refund the full purchase price.

Prices below are for regular 78 rpm records. Up to about 5 records, I will ship Edison Discs for the same rates. Albums from Album Sets count as 1 record. Above that and for international shipments, it will be actual weight plus a small packing charge (1-3$ depending on size of shipment)

5 records: 7.50$

10 records: 9.50$

MANY MORE RECORDS: Don't worry. I safely ship 40 - 50 pounds of records double boxed in moving boxes, and even then Media Mail will probably not exceed 30$.
