Ester Mazzoleni (Sibenico, March 12, 1883 - Palermo, May 17, 1982) was an Italian soprano.
She was born in Sibenik, Dalmatia, the daughter of two native Italians, Paolo and Filomena Rossini. The family was one of the richest in the city, so much so that the main theater in Sibenik was named after the ancestor Francesco Mazzoleni. This title was changed only in 1945. Ester Mazzoleni had a sister, Ida and two brothers, Giovanni and Enrico.
After studying with soprano Amelia Pinto, she made her debut in Il Trovatore in 1906 at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma where on March 24 she is Rachele in L'ebrea directed by Rodolfo Ferrari and on April 3 Fricka in the premiere of L'oro del Reno directed by Ferrari with Giuseppe Borgatti and Giuseppe De Luca (baritone). In 1907 she is Loreley directed by Cleofonte Campanini with Mansueto Gaudio at the Teatro Regio in Parma.
Her career was exceptional, making her debut in 1908 as Isabella / Iguamota in Cristoforo Colombo (opera) directed by Arturo Toscanini at the Scala in Milan followed by Leonora in the unsuccessful La Forza del Destiny directed by Toscanini with Rosa Raisa and by Giulia in La Vestale (Spontini) with Emilio De Marchi (tenor), Riccardo Stracciari and Nazzareno De Angelis also sung in the premiere at the Palais Garnier in Paris in 1909 with De Marchi, Stracciari and De Angelis. Also at La Scala he sang at the first Italian performance of Luigi Cherubini's Medea with De Angelis, on 30 December 1909. In his strings there were also very different characters, such as Isotta and Norma sung in 1910 conducted by Ferrari with Edoardo Ferrari Fontana at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna and in 1912 at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice where in the same year Elisabetta di Valois in Don Carlo conducted by Ferrari with Carlo Galeffi. Famous remains her Aida directed by Tullio Serafin with Giovanni Zenatello, Maria Gay, Mansueto Gaudio and Giuseppe Danise, on the occasion of the opening of the Verona Arena in 1913. Ester Mazzoleni returned to the city of Verona with great acclaim on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of 'event. Also in 1913 she directed by Ferrari in Bologna she is a young girl in the premiere of L'amore dei tre re with Giulio Crimi and Giselda in I Lombardi alla prima crusade with Edoardo Garbin.
She married, in 1925, a gentleman from Palermo and therefore moved to Palermo, going to live in a charming villa in via Marchese Ugo which was later sold and has now disappeared. After her marriage, she announced her retirement from the stage in 1926.
She died in Palermo on May 17, 1982 at the age of ninety-nine.
In memory of her, the Friends of the Opera "E. Mazzoleni" Association was born in Palermo; it established the Ester Mazzoleni prize "A life for opera", which is awarded every year to prestigious personalities of opera.
