Description
The great scene from Aida Act II Scene 1 the confrontation of Aida and Amneris by two of the great singers in this role, polish Elena Ruszkowska and Spanish Bianca Lavin de Casas,
The complete scene comprises 3 records, pls check my other listings for the remaining sides.
We are currently offering a selection of mostly unissued classical vocal 78s on very limited custom pressings. The records are pressed from the original masters on modern vinyl (similar to an LP) and are all in mint condition. The sound is exceptional, as there is no groove wear or defects of any kind. They all have white labels with short notes on the label. Many of these selections have never been issued in any form.
Clandestine pressings from the 1960/70s these are all one sided, white label with handwritten notes. Talking to old time collectors there were two sources of these pressings:
a.) There was an employee at the RCA pressing plant who would run pressings of a master, mostly one copy made, and offer them to collectors.
b.) A group of collectors with access to the Victor vaults would run small pressing runs (5-10 copies)
Given that since the 1960s the Victor Vault went through several purges, and masters suffer from corrosion if improperly handled, these vinyl pressings are unique examples, where the master may not even exist any more.

Elena Ruszkowska (Soprano) (Lviv 1877 – Cracow 1948)

She made her debut in 1900 at the opera house of Lviv in Flotow’s ‘’Martha’’. She had married Marcel Zboinski and appeared in Poland as Elena Zboinska-Ruszkowska. On 4. 10. 1900 she sang in the premiere of the opera ‘’Janek’’ of Wladyslaw Zelenski. In 1906 she sang in Warsaw in the premiere of the opera ‘’Maria’’ of Roman Statkowski. In 1904 she gave a very successful concert in Vienna, in 1906 she performed there in Verdi’s ‘’Aida’’. After the separation, she married in Vienna (1907) the secretary of the Austrian Minister of Finance Dr. Ferdinand Seeliger. The same year she guested at La Scala, Milan Scala as Gutrune in ‘’Gotterdammerung’’opposite Felia Litvinne who sang the role of Brunnhilde. In the 1908-09 season she appeared again at La Scala, but this time as Elena in ‘’Mefistofele’’ of Boito with Fedor Schaljapin in the title part. In 1909 she made guest appearance at the Teatro Massimo, Palermo. Since 1910 she appeared in famous italian opera theatres, also in Spain and South America. In 1910 she sang at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, the next year once more at La Scala in ‘’Aida’’, one of her star roles. From 1919 to 1928 she was a mamber of the Warsaw Opera and probably after 1923 she has appeared only in Poland. Her career lasted very much long; still in 1938 she given a concert. Later she was a highly respected pedagogue in Cracow.

Bianca Lavin De Casas (Mezzo-Soprano) (Spain 1875 - ?)
Probably she made her debut in 1898. In 1902 she appeared at La Scala in Milan as Fricka in ‘’La Walkiria’’ and then sang there the role of Pierotto in ’’ Linda di Chamounix’’ of Donizetti. In 1908 she performed in ‘’Carmen’’ at the Teatro Massimo in Palemo. In 1910 she had big success at the Teatro Colon, Buenos Aires, where she sang among other things the role of Pantalis in Boito’s opera ‘’Mefistofele’’. In the 1911-12 season she sang at the Teatro Regio in Parma once more her star role Carmen; there she alsoappeared as Maddalena in ‘’Rigoletto’’. She was also appreciated in Spain as a Zarzuela singer.
