Description

CONDITION: EXCELLENT+ condition 12-inch double sided disc from 1913, this is the very first orchestra recording of WILLIAM H. TYERS Maxixe composition, "MAORI" recorded on May 8th, interestingly the same date of a piano solo recording on Columbia that is typically credited as being first...this is the VICTOR MILITARY BAND accustomed to performing early jazz numbers, one steps, two steps, and fox trots---and on the flip side is another interesting song, this time a valse (Waltz) but performed in double time--elbow room please---of the composer of Maori, we have the following:

William H Tyers was born in 1876 and was among the most prominent musicians amidst the new generation of African American musicians that were incredibly popular in New York City during the turn of the century. He arranged music for popular bands during that time as well as conducted an orchestra at a popular club.

One of Tyers’ most celebrated releases was a composition of his called Maori.  It was a combination of the newer jazzy sounds as well as some island inspired sounds incorporating instruments such as banjos, marimbas, mandolins, and castanets, which weren't often used for jazz arrangements. This song was incredibly popular with African American bands at the time and even went on to be be recorded by Duke Ellington in 1928, almost 20 years after it was written in 1909.
