EDISONs GREATEST COUP - SIGNING up SERGEI Vasilievitch RACHMANINOFF

Rachmaninoff in 1921, photographed at Kubey-Rembrandt Studios.

Having fled revolutionary Russia to the US, Edison proved lucky in snatching up Rachmaninoff before Victor or Columbia could get a hold of him.

Here, in the New York Edison Studios, Rachmaninoff recorded for the first time EVER on Diamond Disc.

However, Edison apparently was deaf to the art of Rachmaninoff: callin him a POUNDER, insulting him by forcing to play on an Upright piano, and finally issuing a bad take of the Hungarian Rhapsody lead to a quick dissolution of the relationship.

Rachmaninoff quickly went over to Victor, where he stayed and recorded profusively until the end of his Life.
