The movements of the Beethoven Ninth are four:

1. Allegro ma non troppo e poco maestoso
2. Molto vivace (at 13:22)
3. Adagio molto e cantabile (at 22:55)
4. Presto; Allegro assai (at 35:47; vocal portion begins at 41:58)

The second movement (Scherzo) is not played complete; after the Trio is heard, only the opening (the first twelve notes) of the Scherzo "da capo" is played before cutting to the Coda. It is a relatively easy matter to manufacture a "da capo," by pasting in a copy of the first side at that point, and I have done this in the present transfer.

This recording is of great historical importance as being the first complete recording of the Beethoven Ninth ever put on sale, and very likely the first one actually recorded (Albert Coates' recording of the Ninth, on HMV in England, which I have uploaded elsewhere on YouTube, was completed on November 8, 1923, and was issued in May, 1924, in time for the 100th anniversary of the symphony's first performance). Earlier, in 1921, Frieder Weissmann had recorded the finale only, for German Parlophon (with a couple of the purely orchestral passages cut, including about half of the introduction), but this was released only in 1924, and only by English Parlophone, combined with Weissmann's 1924 recording of the first three movements. The Ninth's finale was re-recorded by Parlophon in 1925, with Eduard Mörike conducting, and it was this recording that was used in the German Parlophon and American Odeon issues of the Beethoven Ninth, along with the 1924 Weissmann-recorded movements.

Bruno Seidler-Winkler (1880-1960) was the musical director of Deutsche Grammophon from 1903 to 1923, and conducted hundreds of recordings for them during this time. This recording of the Beethoven Ninth, dating as it does from the end of his time there, constitutes an impressive valedictory undertaking for the company.

Quick note on grading:

The Grade (Excellent to Fair, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately

When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to F), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise.
"SUPERQUIET" is basically noiseless, like a vinyl pressing.
"VERY QUIET" is an quiet record for a given pressing.
"Quiet" is a record that is a great example without undue noise for a give pressing.

These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment.

Records will be packed safely between corrugated cardboard in a sturdy box with plenty of padding for safe shipment.

Shipment is usually Media Mail, unless another service is requested. Shipping is at your risk, I will be happy to insure items at your cost.

I charge actual postage plus a small fee for packing materials

As always, I guarantee your satisfaction. If you don't like the item, just return it, and I will refund the full purchase price.

Prices below are for regular 78 rpm records. Up to about 5 records, I will ship Edison Discs for the same rates. Albums from Album Sets count as 1 record. Above that and for international shipments, it will be actual weight plus a small packing charge (1-3$ depending on size of shipment)

5 records: 7.50$

10 records: 9.50$

MANY MORE RECORDS: Don't worry. I safely ship 40 - 50 pounds of records double boxed in moving boxes, and even then Media Mail will probably not exceed 30$.
