One of Hawaii's greatest pre-World War II bands.
Before the addition of guitarist/vocalist Dave Kaleipua Munson, in late 1927, the band was named the Hanapi Trio but became later the Kalama's Quartet. Although a second steel guitarist, Bob Matsu, joined in 1928, the name was not changed.
The group remained together for a short period. After recording several tunes for OKeh between 1927 and 1931, they completed their recording career with four tracks recorded for Victor in January 1932.
Following the disbanding of the group, Kalama, Nawahine, Munson, and Matsu faded into obscurity.
In the late 1920s and into the early 1930s, Kalama’s Quartet represented a classic Hawaiian sound popular both in the Hawaiian Islands and on the American mainland. The quartet pushed the musical boundaries within the genre, as they experimented with four-part vocal harmonies and two acoustic steel guitars. With the onset of the Great Depression, the desire for a more Americanized sound, and the invention of the electric Hawaiian guitar, classic Hawaiian music lost much of its appeal. This collection includes the quartet’s last known recordings before it disbanded. Liner notes include a brief history of the group.
