A SUPERB COPY

Samba de nego (a Maxixe)Francisco de Morais Alves , better known as Francisco Alves , Chico Alves or Chico Viola ( Rio de Janeiro , 19 of August of 1898 - Pindamonhangaba , from September 27 of 1952 ), was one of the most popular singers of Brazil in the first half of the twentieth century , and considered by many to be the largest in the country. [ 2 ] The quality of his work earned him in 1933, by broadcaster César Ladeira , the nickname " Rei da Voz ". [3 ] It was also a decisive piece for the construction of several popular genres of music. [ 4 ]

Alves was a tall, thin figure; he was always elegant and well combed; very smiling and averse to drinks. [ 5 ] Like his idol Vicente Celestino , he had a tenor voice but, over time, became a baritone . [ 1 ] Of humble origin, he left a vast production of more than five hundred records; [ note 1 ] his tragic death caused a huge commotion in the country, in a feeling that one of his biographers, David Nasser (who was also a friend and composer of some songs he interpreted), wrote: " You, only you, cold wood, you will feel all the agony of the singer's silence". [ 3 ] In spite of this, many in the artistic world considered him brute, of few friends and several disaffected. [ 6 ]

It was his first recording of an electric disc made in Brazil. [ 7 ] Thanks to him, composers such as Cartola , Heitor dos Prazeres or Ismael Silva came to be consecrated, as did several songs he performed, such as Ai! que saudade da Amélia , [ 8 ] or the first recording of samba Aquarela do Brasil by partner Ary Barroso . [ 3 ] It represented for the country, at the time of his death, what the singer Maurice Chevalier was for France : a "rare case" - as then registered theJornal do Brasil . [ 9 ]

Early years and early career

Chico and the viola
His father, José Alves, was a Portuguese immigrant who had settled in the center of Rio, then the capital of the country; there, on Rua do Acre, he opened a bar and it was on this street that the singer was born, one of the five children he had; and on this street he spent his childhood. [ 10 ] Her brothers were Ângela, Lina, Carolina and José and her mother, Isabel Morais Alves, [ 11 ] was also a Portuguese immigrant. [ 12 ]

From the older sister Angela won her first instrument, a guitar . [ 10 ] As a boy, the family moved to Rua Evaristo da Veiga and, in the face of difficulties, he worked as a shoeshine boy and, taking advantage of his proximity to a police battalion, started to follow the rehearsals of his music band; [ 10 ] he ran away from home to avoid having to study to become a bookkeeper (accountant) at Colégio da Ajuda, where his father intended to enroll him, and [ 12 ] when he got older, he got his first job (1916) at Mangueira hat factory , [ note 2 ]; [ 13 ] [ 3 ] [ 13 ] after a short time he went to Júlio Lima . [ 10 ] Her sister Lina, in turn, entered the artistic world and would become an actress as a star in the magazine theater and later in the radio soap operas, adopting the name of Nair Alves. [ 11 ] [ note 3 ]

In 1918 he started singing professionally; his first place of presentation was the Pavilhão do Méier where he was hired after a test, [ 2 ] done by Mário Lago's father , conductor Antônio Lago. [ 11 ] From there sang in the Spinelli Circus and was part of an artistic company that soon dissolved, with the arrival in town of the pandemic of Spanish flu , [ 2 ] who came to kill his brother Joey (Joseph) in 1918 and his father in next year; [ 11 ] the same year he started working as a chauffeur fortaxi . [ 10 ] Reveals admiration for the singer Vicente Celestino that he saw in presentations at Teatro São José , in whose style he was inspired. [ 3 ]

With the death of his father and brother, and the marriage of his sisters, he lived alone with his mother. [ 10 ] In 1919, the group returned to organize itself in Niterói and Alves, once again, joined the company. [ 2 ] During this period, he met the already famous composer Sinhô who then introduced him to the son of Chiquinha Gonzaga , who was installing a record factory and, in 1919, he recorded for the new label called Popular . [ 2 ]

Core of the album "O Pé de Anjo", recorded in 1919
This work brought Sinhô as a rhythmist and took some of his nieces to the choir; the two compositions of the album were his own: the marchinha " O Pé de Anjo " and the samba " Fala, Meu Louro "; he also recorded the samba " Alivia Esse Olhos " , also by Sinhô . [ 2 ] Sinhô, who was responsible for launching many artists, was the one who taught Alves the vocal techniques. [ 7 ]

He became a regular in the bohemian areas of Lapa and Vila Isabel , where he met many artists, including Pixinguinha ; it was in Lapa that in 1920 he met, in a cabaret , Perpétua Guerra Tutoia, with whom he had a brief marriage, against the family's dismay. [ 10 ] The union with the girl who had the nickname Ceci happened, according to him, in a moment of madness, and lasted about a week. [ 11 ]

The wrong marriage
Chico had met Ceci - a pseudonym adopted in the life of a prostitute - in a low-class brothel on Rua Joaquim Silva and found himself promptly in love with the woman he himself described as being " beautiful, attractive, very painted mouth, malicious eyes and dress glued to the body "which" gave it the indescribable local color . " [ 15 ]

I immediately wanted to get the girl out of that "sinful" life and environment; to do so he asked her to marry him and she accepted; but neither his friends - who filled him with warnings - nor the family agreed to such a union: from his mother Isabel he heard that this would be " the greatest heartbreak " of his life; Sister Angela reminded her of her father, who would never approve of that act; nothing moved Alves from the decision and, on May 24, 1920, in a celebration that was only civil , he married the prostitute without the presence of friends or family. [ 15 ] There were unknown witnesses who happened to be nearby; the party was restricted to bread and butter - or "medium" as it was called. [ 12 ]

After a few days, however, his wife confessed to him that she had not abandoned the profession, that she continued to work as a prostitute because she did it not just for the money, but because she liked the joyful and busy life of the brothels; in the face of the shock of the revelation - he would later tell his friend David Nasser not to understand how anyone liked that life - the relationship ended less than a month after it started. [ 15 ]

Chico never came in with a split ; as he told Nasser, this happened out of ignorance and, in his words: " Perpétua had sued me twice, injuring me in court. The judge won me over and since then we have been legally separated from the body. I had no money and I only had the body and the body clothes, I believed it was everything ". [ 12 ]

The failure in the relationship was not the same in his career: he joined the company of Batista de Oliveira, in Niterói , and met a new love. [ 15 ] Perpetua (or Ceci) disappeared from his life for thirty years - when he returned surprisingly. [ 15 ]

1920s - singer, still taxi driver, beginning of success

Nair Alves (Colombina), brother Chico (Almofadinha) and Marieta Field in the magazine "Sonho de Ópio", 1923
In 1921, the businessman José Segreto invited him to perform at Teatro São José, in the magazine plays of his production, nothing less than the successes of his idol Vicente Celestino . [ 2 ] At Teatro São José he was part of the magazine company of actor Alfredo Silva, where he spent a short time as a chorus, being promoted to a secondary actor and, soon, protagonist of the comic play that popularized the homonymous song “ A Malandrinha ”. [ 13 ] In the same year, he met and married actress Célia Zenatti, with whom he would live for twenty-eight years. [ 3 ]Despite already acting professionally as an artist, he did not abandon the activity of taxi driver. [ 10 ]

Changing the record label, he launched in 1924, for Odeon , recordings of samba and marches, but did not achieve a good result. [ 2 ]

Admiral said that, starting in 1928, Alves launched supplements for Parlophon , parallel to the records for Odeon; while in this one he used the real name, in the one he used the nickname of Chico Viola ; this generated confusion even in people in the artistic field, who debated which of the two singers would be the best: some said they were Francisco, others Chico - arguing about the same voice and the same singer. [ 16 ]

In 1930 he started recording in a duet with Mário Reis (then recently graduated in law and working at Banco do Brasil ) and this represented, according to historian Ronaldo Conde Aguiar, " a milestone in the history of Brazilian popular music " the formation of the duet; the partnership was a huge success and for two years they recorded twenty-four songs (or twelve albums) together. [ 15 ]

In 1930 he recorded for the carnival the march " Dá Nela ", which was such a success that he deserved Casa Edison , owner of the record label Parlophon , his biggest prize; in the middle of this year, the assassination of the then governor of Paraíba , João Pessoa , occurred , which triggered the revolutionary movement that would bring Getúlio Vargas to power for the first time ; in the heat of the facts, Alves records the " Hino a João Pessoa ". [ 17 ] When political events worsen, however, he travels on an excursion to Buenos Aires , hired by the magazine theater company ofJardel Jércolis . [ 17 ]

1930s - the great success
In 1931, he demonstrated a lack of education and sensitivity, which revolted many: there were several friends beside the young pianist Nilton Bastos , about to die from the tuberculosis that victimized him, and Alves would have entered the room singing: " When I die , I don't want to cry or sail ... "- a fact narrated by Mário Reis . [ 6 ]

In 1932, with Carmen Miranda , Gastão Formenti , Mozart Bicalho , Patrício Teixeira and Elisa Coelho joined the exclusive cast of Rádio Mayrink Veiga . [ 18 ]

"Ases do Samba" on board Itaquera: Unknown (standing), Pery, Mário, Chico, Noel and Nonô (seated)
In May of this year Alves, already consecrated as an artist and popular idol, along with the beginners Noel Rosa (then only 21 years old), Mário Reis and the two musicians Pery Cunha (mandolinist) and Romualdo Peixoto , form a group that he called " Ases do Samba "and make an excursion through the South ; in Rio Grande do Sul they passed through Porto Alegre , Caxias do Sul , São Leopoldo , Cachoeira do Sul , Pelotas and Rio Grande - going there on board the ship Itaquera, on a seven-day trip. [ 5 ]Pelotonist chronicler Mário Osório Magalhães records that Alves had been peremptory in the dress they should wear in presentations: just tuxedo ; in the first, however, Noel appeared in a white suit that he had taken from a waiter, much to the singer's despair, who was then calmed by Mário Reis saying that the public would certainly think that the difference would be " bossa ". [ 5 ] On their way through the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, they met, in a bar, the then young artist Lupicínio Rodrigues , whom Noel had predicted that " this boy will go far ". [ 19 ]

In 1933 he participated in a duet with the then unknown Aurora Miranda in his debut recording, which was precisely the first typically June music recorded, Cai, Cai, Balão , by the Bahian composer Assis Valente ; Miranda later testified that the singer liked to help beginners. [ 20 ]

Francisco Alves, in a 1939 promotional photo
In 1935 she had the future singer Carmem Costa , at the time only fifteen years old, as a maid , whom she helped in her early career. [ 21 ] [ note 4 ] In this decade, Carlos Galhardo began his career by imitating his voice, and only afterwards did he free himself to have his own style. [ 23 ] In 1939 Alves makes the first recording of the anthological Aquarela do Brasil , by Ary Barroso, which, with arrangements by the pianist Radamés Gnattali , occupies both sides of the disc on which it was recorded. [ 4 ]

In 1940, he participated in musical numbers in the film Orange of China ; in the magazine specializing in cinema A Scena Muda , Renato de Alencar wrote a review that read: “ what a terrifying thing is that of Chico Alves' songs among the" favelagem ", as if he were on a platform of pastorinhas there in the northeast! ” [ 24 ] In this same year the chronicler of this magazine, Walter Rocha, narrated the following case of the singer (original emphasis):" They say that Francisco Alves, when he first toured Buenos Aires, despite having the greatest voice in Brazil, had the "intelligence" to debut singing tangos in the platinum language. And the result took on an anecdotal characteristic, Chico was warmly applauded, returned to the stage, sang, received new applause, until his manager, behind the curtain, realized that the audience applauded and hummed, rhythmically, in rhythm with the words: sing, sing until you learn ". [ 25 ], samba by Alfredo da Rocha Vianna “Pixinguinha” with Francisco Alves accompanied by the Casino Copacabana Group on disk Odeon 10111 B (matrix 1470). Launched in February 1928.
