A series of great orchestral recordings:

Leopold Stokowski's delightful first recording of Saint Saens fanciful "Carnaval des animaux"
with the great piano playing by recent Curtis institute graduates Mary Binney Montgomery (student of Rosenthal, Margulis and Copeland) & Olga Barabini (Josef Hofmann's student), piano.

Stokowski's interpretation is fanciful and unique, with the Tortoise turning in to a funeral dirge, and the scales of the pianist fluttering through the birds. This recording shows off the virtuoso nature of the Philadelphia Orchestra of that era:  the flute of William Kincaid, the clarinet of Daniel Bonade, the cello of Willem van den Berg, the bass of Anton Torello (1884-1960) who was Principal bass of the Philadelphia Orchestra for 33 seasons.  The two pianists were Olga Barabini (1900-1980) and Mary Binney Montgomery (later Mary Binney Wheeler, 1907-1995).

VERY GOOD PLUS PLUS, unworn but scuffed, tight crack first 2cm causes clicks, tiny needle drop on 2, plays very quiet some hiss

1929 - Saint-Saëns - 'Carnival des animaux' ('Carnival of the Animals')

On September 26 and 27, 1929, Stokowski recorded the Camille Saint-Saëns 'Carnival des animaux' ('Carnival of the Animals').

'Carnival des animaux' has proved to be one of Saint-Saëns' most popular works; far more often played than, for example, the five Saint-Saëns piano concerti, which are of a high quality.  However, it seems that Saint-Saëns was concerned that 'Carnival des animaux' would be considered frivolous, and undermine his musical reputation.  Saint-Saëns did not allow the work to be published during his lifetime, except the famous music of the Swan movement.

Quick note on grading:

The Grade (Excellent to Poor, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately

When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to P), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise.
"SUPERQUIET" is basically noiseless, like a vinyl pressing.
"VERY QUIET" is an exceptionally quiet record for a given pressing.
"Quiet" is a record that is a great example without undue noise for a give pressing.

These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment.

Records will be packed safely between corrugated cardboard in a sturdy box with plenty of padding for safe shipment.

Shipment is usually Media Mail, unless you request another service. Shipping is at your risk, I will be happy to insure items at your cost.

I charge actual postage plus a small fee for packing materials

As always, I guarantee your satisfaction. If you don't like the item, just return it, and I will refund the full purchase price.

Prices below are for regular 78 rpm records. Up to about 5 records, I will ship Edison Discs for the same rates. Albums from Album Sets count as 1 record. Above that and for international shipments, it will be actual weight plus a small packing charge (1-3$ depending on size of shipment)

1 record: 4.75 – 5.00$

2 records: 6.00$

5 records: 7.50$

10 records: 10.00$

MANY MORE RECORDS: Don't worry. I safely ship 40 - 50 pounds of records double boxed in moving boxes, and even then Media Mail will probably not exceed 35$.
