Description
Up for auction is a used 78 RPM record of Louis Armstrong and his Savoy Ballroom Five, performing “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love and “No One Else But You” on the OKeh record label. The record comes in its original sleeve.
These two sides were recorded on March 5, 1929, in New York City. According to one source, the Savoy Ballroom Five in 1929 were actually the Luis Russell Orchestra, which was considered one of the first swing bands in jazz. Guitarists Lonnie Johnson and Eddie Condon may have also played on these recordings.
This record is OKeh 41204 and the recordings are numbers 401690 and 402168, as listed on the labels.
I played the record on my turntable (on 33 RPM but sped it up with my finger) and although there is noticeable wear and hisses, the sides are in relatively good playing shape considering their age.
There are two small chips on the very outside edge of “No One But You” – but before the recording starts (see photos).
This record was owned by a relative in San Francisco. Now it is time to sell this vintage item to a desiring buyer, so I can clean out my closets…one item at a time = : > )
