 Marguerite Long (1874-1966). She was a student of Antoine-François Marmontel at the Paris Conservatoire, became a piano instructor there in 1906, and in 1920 succeeded Louis Diémer as professor. She was the first woman professor at the Paris Conservatoire. In 1920 she also founded her own private music school which became a success. In 1940 violinist Jacques Thibaud joined her. They gave numerous recitals together and eventually established the Long-Thibaud Competition. Although she was one of the great interpreters of the music of Chopin, Liszt, Mozart, Beethoven and others, she devoted a great deal of her energies to performing the music of her contemporaries. Ravel dedicated his Concerto in G major to her, as did Milhaud his First Piano Concerto. Her interpretations of music by Debussy, Fauré, Ravel, and Milhaud are considered urtext. According to Milhaud, she once stated that "My task has been to serve great composers who chose me as their interpreter by passing on to others how their music sounded to them". Her 1935 recording of Alfama by Darius Milhaud [Track 15] is certainly an excellent example of her art.

Philippe Gaubert (4 July 1879 – 8 July 1941) was a French musician who was a distinguished performer on the flute, a respected conductor, and a composer, primarily for the flute.

Gaubert was born in Cahors in Southwest France. He became one of the most prominent French musicians between the two World Wars. After a prominent career as a flautist with the Paris Opéra, he was appointed in 1919, at the age of forty, to three positions that placed him at the very center of French musical life:

Professor of flute at the Conservatoire de Paris (professor from Marcel Moyse),
Principal conductor of the Paris Opéra
Principal conductor of the Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire.
In 1907 he participated in the first performance of Maurice Ravel's Introduction and Allegro for harp, flute, clarinet and string quartet. Among his recordings as conductor, one that he made of Franck's Symphony in D Minor (with the Conservatoire forces) is particularly notable.

Gaubert's compositions are by no means especially innovative, but his work benefited from the examples of Franck, Ravel, and Debussy. Naïla, his opera in three acts, premiered at the Paris Opéra on 7 April 1927. Three of his ballets had their first performances at that venue, as well.

During 1941, Gaubert died of a stroke while in the French capital. His friend, the journalist Jean Bouzerand, convinced the town of Cahors to create a public garden named in his honor near the river Lot in the late 1930s. When Gaubert was still alive, Albert Roussel dedicated the movement 'Monsieur de la Péjaudie' in his piece 'Joueurs de Flûte' to him.

Quick note on grading:

The Grade (Excellent to Fair, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately

When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to F), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise.
"SUPERQUIET" is basically noiseless, like a vinyl pressing.
"VERY QUIET" is an exceptionally quiet record for a given pressing.
"Quiet" is a record that is a great example without undue noise for a give pressing.

These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment.

Records will be packed safely between corrugated cardboard in a sturdy box with plenty of padding for safe shipment.

Shipment is usually Media Mail, unless another service is requested. Shipping is at your risk, I will be happy to insure items at your cost.

I charge actual postage plus a small fee for packing materials

Prices below are for regular 78 rpm records. Up to about 5 records, I will ship Edison Discs for the same rates. Albums from Album Sets count as 1 record. Above that and for international shipments, it will be actual weight plus a small packing charge (1-3$ depending on size of shipment)

MANY MORE RECORDS: Don't worry. I safely ship 40 - 50 pounds of records double boxed in moving boxes, and even then Media Mail will probably not exceed 30$.
