Description

This is an unusual early RCA Victor Program Transcription 10-inch 33⅓ RPM record, catalog DL-5, dating from 1931. It comes from RCA Victor's pioneering attempt to introduce a long-playing disc format many years before the modern microgroove LP. Research on the series identifies DL-5-A as the first Victor Program Transcription release, recorded July 30, 1931.

The DL-5-A side, “Join the Victor Artists’ Party,” is a variety-style promotional program featuring Frank Crumit as Master of Ceremonies, The Revelers, pianists Victor Arden and Phil Ohman, and Nathaniel Shilkret and the Victor Orchestra. Rather than presenting a single song, the side showcases several Victor recording artists in an extended entertainment program designed to demonstrate the capabilities of Victor's new long-playing format.

The reverse, DL-5-B, “Victor Music Festival,” features the Victor Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Nathaniel Shilkret. It presents a condensed classical concert program including selections from Wagner's MeistersingerOverture, Dvořák's “Songs My Mother Taught Me,” Rimsky-Korsakov's “Flight of the Bumble Bee,” and Tchaikovsky's Marche Slave.
