First recording of Anton BRUCKNER Symphony 9 in the URFASSUNG by Siegmund von Hausegger conducting the Munich Philharmonic. This is also the first attempt to record a Bruckner Symphony not using the heavily edited version, which most were originally published

Orel edition (1932)

This was the first edition that attempted to reproduce what Bruckner actually wrote. This version was first performed in 1932 by Siegmund von Hausegger with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. In the concert, the symphony was performed twice, first in Löwe's edition and then in the Orel version. It includes only the first three complete movements.

His extraordinary Symphony # 9 in d minor suffered a similar fate. While free from the composer's own misgivings and second thoughts, its posthumous 1903 publication was "edited" by his disciple Ferdinand Löwe, who reduced the dissonances, added transitional modulations and tempered the brittle climaxes with smooth swells of sound. Fortunately, despite a lifetime of submission to others' tastes, Bruckner bequeathed his original manuscripts to the Austrian imperial library, thus ensuring their future availability. The contrast was first unveiled in a revelatory 1932 Munich concert, when Siegmund von Hausegger conducted the Ninth twice – first the Löwe edition and then, to huge acclaim, the world premiere of the autograph. To Hausegger also fell the honor of the first recording. His 1938 set of HMV 78s with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra  is thoroughly convincing, idomatic and solidly shaped. Steeped in German tradition, it projects an unmistakable image of repressed feeling seething beneath a superficially placid surface.

Since then, nearly all performances have been based on editions restored from the original materials, and Bruckner has emerged as a striking creative force with a distinctive symphonic voice. The complexity of Bruckner's vision lay deep within his personality, surely among the most intriguing of any composer.

The Grade (Excellent to Poor, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately

When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to P), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise.
"SUPERQUIET" is basically noiseless, like a vinyl pressing.
"VERY QUIET" is an exceptionally quiet record for a given pressing.
"Quiet" is a record that is a great example without undue noise for a give pressing.

These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment.

Records will be packed safely between corrugated cardboard in a sturdy box with plenty of padding for safe shipment.
