CLAIR JAMES P. JOHNSON. COLUMBIA 3171-D, 3172-D, 3173-D, 3174-D, 3175-D, 3176-D. The six 78 RPM records in this album contain the following 12 songs: 3171-D St Louis Blues/Reckless Blues, 3172-D Weeping Willow Blues/Careless Love Blues, 3173-D Alexander's Ragtime Band/There'll Be A Hot Time In The Old Town Tonight, 3174-D Money Blues/Muddy Water, 3175-D Yellow Dog Blues/Trombone Cholly, 3176-D Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out/Back-Water Blues. I hesitate to use the word "mint" when describing these records, but I have carefully inspected them, and there is not a blemish or scratch on any of them, so I am grading these records in mint condition, since they appear to have never been played or been out of their sleeves, with their labels just about as glossy and bright as the day they were released. The case, which contains a black & white photo paste-down of Smith to the cover is in excellent to very fine condition, except for some minor age blemishes and very light wear to spine tips and corners. Apparently, this is an extremely rare set. I could not find this one listed in any price guide or being offered for sale anywhere on the net. According to info obtained off the net, this set was released by Columbia in 1938 and was the first time an entire album was devoted to a Black Artist. Buyer pays actual postage.
