Paul Whiteman 1938 George Gershwin Memorial Concert Rehearsal Discs
Approximately 35 Minutes on These Seven, 12 Inch, 78 RPM, Black Lacquer Discs
These discs were recorded for Paul Whiteman and not available to the general public, very rare!
The dates on the discs are July 2, 1938 & July 9, 1938. According to Time Magazine, Paul Whiteman performed a George Gershwin Memorial Concert the day after the first anniversary of Gershwin's death on July 11, 1937 - using this information, I suspect these discs were rehearsals for a Gershwin Memorial Concert to take place on July 12, 1938
The contents on the discs are as follows, the first 3 items are approximately 10 minutes each, the last is approximately 5 minutes
“Rhapsody In Blue” rehearsal July 2, 1938 on two discs, approximately 9 minutes
“Second Rhapsody” rehearsal July 2, 1938 on two discs, approximately 11 minutes
“Second Rhapsody” rehearsal July 9, 1939 on two discs, approximately 10 minutes
“Gershwin Song Medley” rehearsal July 9, 1938 on one disc, approximately 5 minutes. Part of the medley includes “Do It Again” with vocal by the chorus. There is a breakdown after 4 minutes, then a restart of the song, and a breakdown again – and ends with what sounds like Paul Whiteman barking at the band
THESE ARE EXTREMELY RARE, MOST LIKELY ONE OF A KIND DISCS AND MOST LIKELY THE ONLY COPIES OF THIS MATERIAL IN EXISTENCE.
