Boris Schwarz Is Dead; Violinist and Teacher

Boris Schwarz, who followed early success as a violinist with a distinguished career in musicology, died Saturday night in Mount Sinai Hospital. He was 77 years old.

Mr. Schwarz was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, on March 26, 1906, and immigrated to Berlin while a child. At the age of 14 he made his violin concert debut in Hanover with his father, the pianist Joseph Schwarz. Mr. Schwarz studied with several prominent teachers, including Carl Flesch, Jacques Thibaud and Lucien Capet. After performing throughout Europe, Mr. Schwarz resettled in the United States in 1936. He was concertmaster of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and later played first violin in the NBC Symphony Orchestra under Arturo Toscanini. He also studied musicology and earned a Ph.D. from Columbia University.

From 1941 to 1976, Mr. Schwarz was a professor of music at Queens College of the City of New York. He was chairman of the music department there from 1948 to 1951 and from 1952 to 1955, and he founded the Queens College Orchestral Society and the Queens College Faculty String Quartet.

Mr. Schwarz was a prolific contributor to the New Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians. His book ''Music and Musical Life in Soviet Russia, 1917- 1970'' won an award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers as the best book of music criticism in 1973. In the foreword to ''Great Masters of the Violin,'' the violinist Yehudi Menuhin observed of Mr. Schwarz: ''There can be no more qualified commentator on the violinist, his soul, his character, his interpretation and his life style.''

Mr. Schwarz is survived by his wife, Patricia Yodido Schwarz; two sons, Joseph and Robert Schwarz, and two grandchildren. Services will be at 11 A.M. tomorrow at Riverside Chapel, Amsterdam Avenue and 76th Street.

Alice Ehlers

The German-born American harpsichordist and teacher, Alice Ehlers, was the first student of world-renowned harpsichordist Wanda Landowska. Together with other early W. Landowska students as Edith Weiss-Mann and Eta Harich-Schneider, she was in the forefront of the early music revival in Germany in general and the revival of the harpsichord in particular.

Alice Ehlers ranked as one the leading harpsichordist of our day. She was unexcelled in her authoritative and sensitive interpretations of Bach's keyboard works. She had a long association with Dr. Albert Schweitzer both as a student as a colleague of his. Ehlers rendered Schweitzer's hospital through benefit concerts (a selection of letters these two great personalities exchanged between the years of 1928 and 1965 was published in the book Albert Schweitzer & Alice Ehlers - A Friendship in Letters). She has concretised widely in the USA, South America, Europe, Israel and Egypt as soloist with major symphony orchestras and in solo and chamber recital.

Since the early 1950's Alice Ehlers lived in California, she was Professor for harpsichord at the University of Southern California. She had a large following of students (among them: Robert Bowman, Laurette Goldberg, Malcolm Hamilton, Victor Hill) and was endeared by them and her fellow artists. In 1961 she founded The Southern California Junior Bach Festival, Inc. (SCJBF), to encourage the study and appreciation of the music of J.S. Bach among young student musicians.

Quick note on grading:

The Grade (Excellent to Fair, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately

When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to F), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise.
"SUPERQUIET" is basically noiseless, like a vinyl pressing.
"VERY QUIET" is an exceptionally quiet record for a given pressing.
"Quiet" is a record that is a great example without undue noise for a give pressing.

These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment.

Records will be packed safely between corrugated cardboard in a sturdy box with plenty of padding for safe shipment.

Shipment is usually Media Mail, unless another service is requested. Shipping is at your risk, I will be happy to insure items at your cost.

I charge actual postage plus a small fee for packing materials

Prices below are for regular 78 rpm records. Up to about 5 records, I will ship Edison Discs for the same rates. Albums from Album Sets count as 1 record. Above that and for international shipments, it will be actual weight plus a small packing charge (1-3$ depending on size of shipment)

MANY MORE RECORDS: Don't worry. I safely ship 40 - 50 pounds of records double boxed in moving boxes, and even then Media Mail will probably not exceed 30$.
