Hulda Lashanska was born on March 15, 1893 in New York City, and died there in January of 1974. She attended Hunter College in New York and studied singing for two years with Frieda Ashford. After her first New York recital in 1909 at the Lyceum Theatre in New York she went to study in Europe for the next two years. Through the influence of Alexander Lambert in 1911 she became a pupil of Marcella Sembrich, and had a great success at her next concert at the Aeolian Hall in New York which launched her career. She sang with the New York Symphony Orchestra under Walter Damrosch, and was also a great success with the Sunday night concerts with the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

Around 1918-19 she recorded for Columbia records, and her record of ôAnnie Laurieö was particularly successful. She toured the United States in 1925, but primarily gave concerts in New York. Madame Lashanska made duet recording for Columbia with Paul Reimers in 1927, singing lieder by Brahms, Schubert, Hugo Wolf and Richard Strauss. In 1936 Hulda Lashanska gave a concert with the New York Philharmonic under Willem Hoogstraten and John Barbirolli. After 1937 she also began to teach, and another recording was made in 1940 with Kerstin Thorborg. Hulda Lashanska also gave many concerts for charitable causes such as the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, The Musicians Emergency Fund, the Visiting Nurse Service, the Henry Street Settlement, thhe Hudson Guild and the League of Mothers' Clubs of the United Neighborhood Houses.

Dort trat sie nur zu Beginn ihrer Karriere 1909-10 in einigen Konzerten auf, sonst beschr?nkte sich ihr k?nstlerisches Wirken ganz auf Nordamerika. 1911 kam sie in einem von ihrer Lehrerin Marcella Sembrich arrangierten Konzert in der New Yorker Aeolian Hall zu einem sensationellen Erfolg und leitete damit eine gro?e Konzertkarriere ein. Anschlie?end gab sie glanzvolle Konzerte mit dem New York Symphony Orchestra unter Walter Damrosch. 1913 unterbrach sie nach ihrer Heirat ihre Karriere, nahm diese aber 1915 wieder auf. 1918 hatte sie einen ihrer gr÷?ten Erfolge, als sie in einem Sunday Night Concert der Metropolitan Oper New York auftrat. Man verglich immer wieder ihre Sopranstimme mit der der unvergessenen Alma Gluck. In der Saison 1919-20 mu?te sie nochmals kurz ihre Karriere unterbrechen, eilte dann aber in den Konzerts?len der USA wieder von Erfolg zu Erfolg. Die B?hne hat sie nicht betreten. Noch 1936 gab sie mehrere glanzvolle Konzerte zusammen mit den New Yorker Philharmonikern unter Willem van Hoogstraten und John Barbirolli. Seit 1937 wirkte sie als P?dagogin.

Von ihrer dunkel timbrierten, ?beraus ausdrucksvollen Stimme existieren Schallplattenaufnahmen auf Columbia und Victor (hier Duette mit Paul Reimers von 1927, sodann Lieder von Schubert, J. Brahms, Hugo Wolf und Richard Strauss). 1940 erschienen auf Victor nochmals Duette mit der Altistin Kerstin Thorborg, auf denen sich die Stimme der S?ngerin in ihrer ganzen Sch÷nheit pr?sentiert.

The Grade (Excellent to Fair, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately, when prefaced with "HOWEVER" or "BUT" they will be significant.

When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to F), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise.
"SUPERQUIET" is basically noiseless, like a vinyl pressing.
"VERY QUIET" is an exceptionally quiet record for a given pressing.
"Quiet" is a record that is a great example without undue noise for a given pressing.

These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment.

Records will be packed safely between corrugated cardboard in a sturdy box with plenty of padding for safe shipment.
