RARE & COLLECTIBLE: 1946 Vogue Picture Record BLUES Clyde McCoy Basin Street Blues & Sugar Blues
Description
Vogue picture records are phonograph records on the "Vogue" label which have a picture (an artist's illustration) embedded in the transparent vinyl of the record. The illustrations on each side of the record are usually related to the title of the song on that side.
"Sugar Blues" and "Basin Street Blues" all on the same Vogue picture 78RPM record. Vogue records, always popular with collectors, were collected for their graphics, and you can't beat these, especially the Basin Street (New Orleans Basin Street and Canal Street intersection ) side. However, these are actual musical records. Both songs were recorded by Clyde McCoy and his orchestra. Vogue picture records were of a very high quality, with little surface noise.
Vogue picture records were produced by Sav-Way Industries of Detroit, Michigan. The first 10-inch Vogue picture records (catalog number R707; like the one offered here) was released to the public in May1946.
Production ceased less than a year later in April 1947, with Sav-Way entering into receivership in August 1947.
"Sugar Blues" and "Basin Street Blues" was the Vogue’s first picture record produced in 1946. It is IMPORTANT to note that there were two versions of the “Vogue” record label, one blue and one was black. The one here is the more rare blue label (please see photographs). Also of note is that the blue version of the Vogue label has two stars rather than the usual three stars shown on the more common black label version on side B (please see photograph).
This Vogue picture record was purchased by my mother in New York at Gimbels Department Store in 1946. It was always kept in a clean collectible item in her collections. It was passed on to me after my mom died. The picture record has since been maintained in very good+ condition in my collections. There are surface scratches. Our ONLY reason for selling this item is due to our age and poor health.
It would make a great gift to be framed and hung on a wall. It is a wonderful conversation piece and collector's item.
