Description

"CALLING ALL BOYS AND GIRLS - CALLING ALL GIRLS AND BOYS - TIME FOR AUNT RITA'S CHILDRENS HOUR, with Aunt Rita's story, Uncle Howard's music, the birthday names and the prize-winning riddles!"

And here's an incredible pair of original RADIO PROGRAM ACETATE TRANSCRIPTION DISCS containing a complete ONE HOUR episode of the popular WLS CHICAGO RADIO series: "AUNT RITA'S CHILDREN'S HOUR" as aired on Sunday, March 23, 1947 from 8:00 to 9:00 AM. This is basically an aircheck, containing all local commercial spots and station announcements.

The disc opens with the CHARLES SEBASTIAN NEWS PROGRAM - a five minute summary of national and local news. Among the topics are the status of union strikes in the rubber and auto industries, President Truman's signing of executive order ending the OPA and authorizing FBI investigation of federal employees to ensure there is no communist infiltration of the government. After the weather and a brief commercial, the WLS announcer turns it over to Aunt Rita - Rita Ascot, a Chicago radio institution.

The show starts of with a birthday song and a reading of the names and ages of birthday kids who had sent in their name to WLS - what a treat that must have been, to hear your name called out on the radio! The hometowns of the kids give some indication of how powerful the WLS broadcast signal was...towns in Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana and more are mentioned. Uncle Howard then plays a song on the radio station's organ, titled "Cut Yourself a Piece of Cake and Make Yourself At Home".

After a little banter with Uncle Jack, Aunt Rita prepares to tell a story called "The Sixth Servant". But first, she tells the kids of their chance to mail in a riddle to get a chance to win a special "Super Duper Pencil Box" if their riddle is used on the air. Uncle Howard plays another song - "Spring is Here Again". Finally - the story about an ugly queen (who was really a witch) and her fair daughter, whose suitors had a bad habit of dying before reaching her.

After the story and a station identification, it's time to go to the Riddle Box!  Children have sent in riddles and Uncle Howard, Uncle Jack and Aunt Rita try to solve them.  Uncle Howard then plays "Twitterpated" (a song from Bambi).  After more riddles, Aunt Rita reminds the kids that if their riddle is read - they'll get one of those Super Duper Pencil Boxes (with 33 pieces!).  Uncle Howard plays "When The Red-Red Robin goes Bob-Bob-Bobbin' Along".  A few more riddles, and the show finally comes to a close with the announcement, "This is WLS, the Prairie Farmer's Station."

It's an extraordinary program - a great piece of Chicago radio history.  These discs were recorded by Myron Bachman of the Chicago Edgewater.
