Stuart Hamblen was the son of a Texas Evangelical Methodist church minister. From 1931-1952 Hamblen had series of popular west coast radio programs. He acted in movies with Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, and John Wayne. Although hugely popular, Hamblen had a serious drinking problem that often landed him in jail for public brawling and destructive behavior. He also had a gambling problem, associated with his ownership of racing horses. Both problems seriously affected his career and personal life. In 1949 Hamblen attended a Billy Graham crusade that changed his life, giving-up alcohol and gambling. After his conversion he entered Christian broadcasting. Hamblen died of brain cancer in 1989.
