Johnny Young Trio
Label matrix: A-136353

This is an especially interesting piece of early Chicago independent-label history.

The recordings themselves date to September 1950, when the Johnny Young Trio recorded at Modern Recording Studio in Chicago. The session was originally intended for release as Seymour 95, but that release apparently never occurred. The masters subsequently passed through Discovery Records before being acquired by Chance Records, which finally issued these two recordings as Chance 1144 in September 1953.

Reference discographies associate the sides with the original Modern Recording Studio matrices MR-2755-1 and MR-2755-4, along with the planned Seymour identifiers S95-A / S95-B. Please see the detailed photographs of the labels, vinyl and runout/dead-wax area included with this listing.

What makes this particular copy especially noteworthy is the transparent/translucent RED vinyl pressing. Standard examples of Chance 1144 are difficult enough to encounter, while this red-vinyl version appears to be extraordinarily scarce.

I have been unable to locate enough documented surviving red-vinyl examples to responsibly state an exact number known. For that reason I am not claiming a specific population, but collectors familiar with Chance Records are invited to examine the photographs and pressing details carefully.
