1955 1st UK Esquire 32-119 Monk's Moods THELONIOUS MONK with either Art Blakey (in the 1954 sessions) or Max Roach in the two 1952 sessions. Best ever Bemsha swing for me with him drumming - incidentally, as a former jazz promoter, I must say Max was the greatest I ever saw, and I saw all the big boys, including Art. The wonderful Gary Mapp or Percy HEATH in the bass chairs, to this delightful album, recorded by RVG by the look of things, as the US is on Riverside and the location is Hackensack, NJ. Grades lower than my other Monk 50s albums listed, but plays through without skips and the fidelity is better than I expected for the early 50s, and the sound is better than the numerous fine scuffs made it appear it would be, greatly aided by the use of a mono cart.
