1956 Alphabetical listing of record collectors in the United States and other countries, with contact information.
This is the first (blue) issue of Burke's Register with over 128 worldwide collector names and addresses, and often copious personal information and collecting preferences.
Burke's Register of Record Collectors, a sort of "Who's Who" in the world of record collecting. Vincent Burke, residing at 172 Thompson Street in Greenwich Village, organized this registry. In a letter he sent, he sought additional nominations for inclusion. He emphasized the significance of forwarding lists of active collectors, working to make record collecting the greatest hobby of all.
The register was dominated by collectors of classical music, but also included a good portion of cylinder/ Edison / Pathe, jazz, blues and country collectors. In addition, major dealers, phonograph/ record societies, as well as the major magazines (High Fidelity, The Gramophone, Record Collector) are listed.
Entries run from Alfonte to Zwart, most entries are a single address line, but many collectors include half page biographies and detailed lists of collecting preferences and want lists. Some even include lists of their phonographs and their hi-fi system,
Notable collectors include Francis Clough, Lawrence Holdridge, Alan Kelly, Julian Morton Moses, Leo Riemens, William Seltsam, Edward J Smith
Loose Leaf Collection 90 pages on blue paper, mimeographed double sided pages, includes red paper Nomination Form to include collectors in next year's edition.
CONDITION GOOD most pages are clean and undamaged, small checkmarks or crosses at margins, no odor or animal hairs, a few pages (from the ends) are tattered at the margins or have some writing and crossings out.
