Paul Smith (1922-2013) was one of the great jazz pianists of all-time, perhaps best known as Ella Fitzgerald's best piano accompanist, but arguably better known for playing with everybody — he played on over 200 LP records, did an enormous amount of TV and film work, and released many solo LPs on a small private label.
And he did the best jazz piano parody album ever made: The Best of Irving Garner.
Offered here is the ultimate collectible copy of this album, because Paul Smith autographed it as Irving Garner!
In addition, although the album doesn't credit sidemen, this being a "mystery album" release that had people at the time guessing who was on it, Paul Smith wrote the name of the drummer on this album: Alvin Stoller.
And, finally, Smith inscribed it "To Ray: You're my biggest and most faithful fan." It's therefore possible that the "Ray" in question was Ray Brown, who — also possibly — could have been the bassist who played on the album.
An awesome piece of 1950s jazz memorabilia that would make a great addition to even the most advanced collection.
I'm going to make the deal even sweeter. You will also get a second Paul Smith album, his 1979 LP, The Alpha Touch (Outstanding 008) and it is also autographed by Paul Smith. It's autographed by reknowned double bassist Wilfred Middlebrooks, too.
As you can see, a comparison between the writing on the two albums demonstrates that Paul Smith indeed signed the Irving Garner album — the key is the distinctive way he writes the letter 'Y'.
Both records are in great condition, jackets very attractive with minimal wear, and the vinyl is superb on both, the 1979 album is near mint.
