Secondhand Record Album For Sale





  • Item: 1957 record album by Thelonious Monk, Brilliant Corners, Riverside deep groove mono RLP 12-226, with no "Inc." after "Bill Grauer Productions" and on the large diameter blue and silver label (which predates the small diameter labels used from 1958-60). This label style also predates the black and silver label style used stating in '58. Apparently, by '56, we see the appearance of two main types of Riverside labels -- the white version and the blue version (each with no "Inc." on label). It's typically thought that the white label examples indicate an earlier pressing (maybe because they look like promos?), but since this title was released in 1957, all I can say is that apparently both label styles were used during that year. I wonder if the intention, per the US and Great Britain patents in the trailoff / deadwax, was to somehow designate one label style for export? Perhaps the most important fact, which most people overlook, is that Riverside Records had 3 different addresses in the year 1957, but the last known address (first seen on the back cover of 1957's Blues For Tomorrow RLP 12-243) was 235 W. 46th Street. Being that the address on this copy of Brilliant Corners is an earlier address (553 W. 51st), the cover must have been manufactured in 1957 (the year of the album's release). Also, on this copy, I notice that just like the white label copies' covers, the promotional info on the back ends with catalog number RLP 12-228. I believe that the repress of this album, in 1958, can be identified by the fact that those examples have the small diameter blue and silver label. It wasn't until circa 1960 that they released this title in Stereo, but even those later issues can fetch over 100 USD on the discogs site. The reason why I don’t have a return policy in addition to the eBay Money Back Guarantee is that return policies cover all other reasons for return (such as the buyer simply changing their mind) but they also require the seller to pay for shipping, which is an expense that I cannot afford, especially in the case of an international transaction.


  • International Shipping: I sympathize with int’l buyers regarding shipping charges and their country’s Customs fees, but because the value must be declared in order to insure the item for that amount, I’m unable to satisfy the expectations of most buyers in certain countries. If you’re an exception, all you need to do is let me know and hopefully we can work together!


  • Condition: Records may not function as intended per surface noise, defective playback due to manufacturing defect or scratches, etc. and covers often have damage such as flawed edges and odors which may require repair or treatment, so I’m selling the item as being in “For parts or not working” condition. Most records are in scratched condition. See Goldmine Record Album Price Guide, 5th Edition, page 17: “It’s estimated that no more than 2 to 4 percent of all records remaining from the 1950’s and 1960s are truly Near Mint” (and the next grade down from Near Mint is VG+, where light scratches are present). If you like the ‘shabby chic’ look of the item, you can buy a record album frame for it from Ikea for 7.99 and display it on your wall. It amazes me that the world of record collecting doesn’t have an official grading company such as in the comic book field (they have CGC), the coin collecting realm (they have PCGS), etc. Until an official 3rd party industry expert comes along, record grading remains subjective and opinions vary due to parties’ differences in audio equipment, etc.
