From my own 47 years collection of Modern Jazz. Exceptional condition vinyl of this 1958 1st anywhere US Stereo Issue Mercury MAX ROACH Sonny Rollins Kenny Dorham Jazz in 3/4 Time. Low Plays Near Mint record, with only dirt and age darkening to the rear of the sleeve to mark that down. Super clean shiny dimple textured front. No splits or bends, creases or pen. Plays fully near mint in lovely warm valve sound with full clarity. Mercury, like Contemporary is one of the greatest sounding jazz labels of the golden age. You already know there are no bad late 50s Rollins lps, and he probably never had a better drummer to work with than Max, who is on fire here by the way. The whole side 2 of Sonny Valse Hot is a masterpiece, with the two of them plus Kenny sparking off each other throughout. The AMG review said:"With tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins becoming a stronger soloist month by month (he was arguably the top tenor in jazz at the time) and veteran trumpeter Kenny Dorham in prime form, Roach was able to stretch himself; the obscure pianist Billy Wallace and bassist George Morrow completed the group. On this LP, Roach explores six songs in waltz time, an innovation for the period (predating Dave Brubeck's recording of "Take Five" by two years). Roach contributed two originals and the group played 3/4 versions of three standards, but it was Rollins' "Valse Hot" (which clocks in on this Mercury album at over 14 minutes in length) that was the hit of the date. These excellent performances show that jazz does not always have to be in 4/4 time in order to swing." My goal is to offer you best sounding analogue only pressings of vintage records. This is already in a new heavy poly outer with antistatic inners added with outer sleeve and records all layered behind each other to prevent splits.
