1958 UNKNOWN ROCK’N’ROLL ACETATE FROM HOLLYWOOD Listen to a sound clip: Love Is My Business Be-Bop Baloo
Jungle Fever Here’s an unusual find for fans of vintage rock’n’roll – a one-sided three-track acetate from a Hollywood studio, dated 1958. The artist is credited as Tom Driscoll and Band – extensive research on the internet has failed to find a reference to anyone of this name recording around 1958. Despite his anonymity, Drisoll is a great Presley-ish vocalist, and the instrumental support is classic large combo rock’n’roll. The three featured tracks are: -Love Is My Business: outstanding mid-tempo cover of Cliff Gleaves classic with rockabilly-ish vocals and honking sax break. -Be-Bop Baloo: hep version of “Be Bop A Lula” with cool guitar and New Orleans-type sax section. -Jungle Fever: fantastic moody instrumental with piano, growling sax and jungle grunts - exotica to the max! The 10-inch disc is in excellent condition with barely any marks and plays well, although there is a slight bit of minor surface noise as to be expected with an acetate of this vintage (the speed is 33 1/3 RPM). The label indicates the studio of origin as Sound Enterprises, a well-known operation used by Specialty and other labels in that era: it also recorded many soundtracks, so these tunes may well be related to a movie.
