1961 RCA LIVING STEREO RDS 220-6 Rene Leibowitz conducting the RPO in all of the Beethoven 9 symphonies. 7 LP Decca recorded and mastered, Kenneth Wilkinson oversaw the recording process, then these are valve amp transferred masterings by Jack Law for golden era New Malden Decca Audiophile pressings. Linen box with pasted on lid and rear,with gold stereophonic sticker and unfaded gilt lettered spine. I am a Beethoven nut myself, and have heard all the great accounts of the symphonies over the decades. I was introduced to these by a fellow collector and seller in the 1980s, and I agree with him, there are perhaps the odd single lp account by other conductors that are really special, but no complete set comes anywhere near this for overall greatness. Rene Leibowitz was a great but under used conductor, a favourite pupil of Monteux and composition student of Maurice Ravel and later taught Pierre Boulez. Audiophiles caught on to this a long time ago, and the Chesky label bought out these on CD in the 80s to massive acclaim (one disc sold here on ebay recently for $120!) - but I still prefer this mastering and Decca pressing of this RD subscription, 1st issue anywhere box. It took me 30 years to find a near mint original stereo set for myself, so this is genuinely hard to find in good enough condition, not played to death or subjected to a poor record player. Book is also beautiful, and the box is intact.
