1961 Radio Spots featuring Little Brother Montgomery

Hello. Up for sale are three double-sided 12” (33 1/3 rpm) radio spot recordings. One is dated Jan. 1961 so I believe all are from that same time period. I’m selling off my radio ad disc collection, so here’s your chance to buy some unusual records. Here’s what you’ll get:

1. RCA, Schmidt Baking Company, Baltimore, Maryland, NR #3, Side 1, LM7P-5584, Norm Pierce, Produced for E.J. Sperry Organization. Side 2: XR121360, LO7P-5517, Memphis Slim, LaFayette Leake, Produced for E.J. Sperry Organization, Chicago, Illinois, by Harold R. Gingrich. SIDE ONE contains Ten :60 Radio Spots featuring both jazz and rock ‘n roll music. Each ad begins with about :20 (!!) of music, then the narrative ad, and then a bit of music to end the track. I believe the music is supplied by Memphis Slim (and a small combo of musicians). These ads are indeed unusual because of the long musical intros. Here’s a rundown: Track 1: jazzy piano with electric guitar, bass, and drums – ad for Schmidt’s Blue Ribbon Bread. Track 2: same combo/style – ad for Schmidt’s “keen taste” “hearth baked” German Rye Bread. Track 3: slow rock ‘n roll heavy on guitar, bass & drums (with piano) – ad for Square Sandwich Bread. Track 4: boogie/rock ‘n roll – ad for Brown and Serve French Bread. Track 5: fast boogie/rock ‘n roll – ad for “Good Doughnuts” in the “aluminum-lined box.” Track 6: slow blues/boogie – ad for Brown and Serve Hot Rolls. Track 7: uptempo jazz – ad for Vitamin Enriched Bread that meets all of the “US Government Standards.” Track 8: moderate-tempo jazz – ad for Italiano Bread, “pleasing because it’s different” and “aged like fine wine.” Track 9: slow boogie – ad for Saint John’s Bread cooked using the “centuries old Bavarian recipe.” Track 10: uptempo boogie – ad for Corn Top Bread “served at the Pilgrims’ first Thanksgiving.” SIDE TWO contains two long (full song) tracks. The first track starts off as a slow boogie/blues number (piano, bass, drums) but changes gears about halfway through to an uptempo boogie/blues number including a drum solo and a bass solo. The second number is a moderate/uptempo number with added electric guitar. Both of these tracks sound like loose jams. I listened to several web tracks featuring LaFayette Leake, and these tracks are different. They don’t sound as professional (well produced) as other recordings. I could be wrong, but these recordings were probably made specifically for this RCA production – and not taken off some other album and placed here. Same for the music used on the Schmidt ads. This is probably music you won’t find anywhere but here. On the record sleeve it reads “NR-3, Start June 12, 1961.”
2. RCA, Schmidt Baking Company, Baltimore, Maryland. Side 1: NR #2, LM7P-5541, XR121360, Cliff Johnson, Produced for E.J. Sperry Organization, Chicago, Illinois, by Harold R. Gingrich. Side 2: NR #4, LO7P-5518, Little Brother Montgomery, J.B. Lenore, Produced for E.J. Sperry Organization, Chicago, Illinois, by Harold R. Gingrich. This record has nearly the same contents as the first disc – but uses the music of Little Brother Montgomery as well as a different announcer. There are Ten :60 radio spots for Schmidt’s and each one begins with :20 of music before the narration begins. You’ll hear bits of uptempo jazz featuring the piano (and small combo including electric guitar), boogie-woogie piano, guitar-based rock ‘n roll (two tracks), uptempo boogie-woogie, slow boogie, and moderate jazz. The same products touted on record #1 are also touted here. On the flip side there are two long tracks performed by Little Brother Montgomery and his combo. The first begins as a slow blues number (heavy on the piano) then picks up speed to feature an extended bass solo and electric guitar jams. Side Two is a mid-tempo rock ‘n roll/shuffle/blues rock sort of deal with added sax player. You’ll hear two bass solos and two drum solos. Both of these tracks, like those heard on the first disc, sound more like loose jams than a well-produced recording meant for commercial release. In my opinion, that makes them all the more cool.
3. RCA, Schmidt Baking Company, Blue Ribbon Brown ‘n Serve Rolls, Theme: “Thank You for Leadership.” A sticker on Side 2 reads “Start 1-12-61.” Both sides feature the music of the Bobby Christian Trio and the announcers Jack Karey and Vince Lloyd. The combo includes piano, xylophone, and bongos/drums. Sometimes a word or phrase mentioned by the announcer is highlighted with an after-bang on the bongos. Side One contains five :60 ads and one :30 ad. Side Two contains the same. All ads are different and all tout Brown ‘n Serve Rolls. “A miracle food” and “goodie-good good.” At various times the announcer thanks someone for their leadership. I’ll assume this if meant for both retailers and customers.
