TWO GREAT SIDES ON THIS MEGA RARE SOUTH AFRICAN 78!!
The Shadows - FBI -
The Shadows are Britain's most successful instrumental and vocal group with a total of 69 UK hit charted singles: 35 as 'The Shadows' plus 34 as 'Cliff Richard and The Shadows', from the 1950s to the 2000s.
According to Record Retailer during 1960-67 The Shadows, in terms of No.1 selling EPs, are 2nd equals with Cliff Richard and Elvis Presley each with 4 No.1 selling EPs while The Beatles came 1st with 8 No.1's. In addition, The Shadows, in terms of an overall total number of weeks in the EP chart came 1st with a total of 461 weeks. Cliff Richard came 2nd with 432 weeks and The Beatles 3rd with 382 weeks.
The Shadows were pioneers of the four-member rock-group format (consisting of lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bass guitar and drums) in the UK. They enjoyed a second wave revival spell of success and interest in their music from the late seventies until disbandment in 1990. Their unique guitar sound was originally produced by a combination of American Fender guitars, British amplifiers made by Vox and echo units Meazzi Echomatic tape and Binson magnetic disc.
The Shadows pioneered the use of lighting effects in the UK at their concerts during 1960-63 using their driver, Sam Curtis, as a pioneering example of a lighting technician. Prior to this development British singers and their groups used only the lime-light type lighting from the stage floor and any spot lamps aimed exclusively at the singer.
They used two primitive spot lamps and very basic color filters aimed from the rear of the concert hall to enhance the Shadows' performance during certain chart topping numbers such as 'Frightened City'(red filter), 'Midnight'(blue filter), 'Apache'(green filter).
That’s not all. When we are on stage and the lights change from a red glow for ‘Frightened city’ to a haunting blue for ‘Midnight’, that’s Sam’s [Sam Curtis] doing. He stands in the wings watching our act, giving instructions to the electrician on what lighting is needed.
When Marvin (or Welch) was highlighted during certain Shadows' numbers (eg Harris' bass solo 'Nivram') a single white spot lamp was aimed at his guitar. Their own set of Shadows' numbers always finished with 'FBI' where the spot lamps in swirling motions across the stage mimicking the American FBI Police's use of search lights in pursuance of criminals!
