This is for an original 45 RPM of the great Otis Redding and the Pinetoppers singing Shout Bamalama and Fat Girl on Confederate records. As the story goes, a 19 year old Otis Redding walked into the office of Bobby Smith and asked if he was interested in signing him as a singer. He didn’t have a tape so he sang in person for Smith who immediately signed him to a contract on his Confederate Records label. Smith had obtained studio time at the University of Georgia’s channel 8 TV studios to record Otis and a few more artists, but the night before recording he was informed that the guitarist of the Pinetoppers, Johnny Jenkins was unavailable. Otis was able to find a replacement in Carl Thomas for the session and recording went as planned with Thomas’s licks filling in just fine. Driving to radio stations to promote the record, some DJ’s would tell Smith and Redding they loved the record, but had a problem promoting anything with a confederate flag on the label while others would just toss it in the trash without even listening Smith returned to Macon Georgia and started Orbit records with the Redding single being its first release, returned to the stations with the record on the new label and every station gave it heavy air play, starting the career of the legendary Otis Redding. The rest as they say is history. This is one of those Holy Grails of record collecting as not only is it the first recording of a young Otis Redding using his own name but the amount of records pressed was incredibly small since they would end up switching labels before the record even hit the airwaves. I don’t have a Rabco or Thorens turntable anymore, but the record sounded just fine on my daughters portable player with no skips and hardly any crackles, but please take that with a grain of salt. The labels on each side are nice and clean as the scans show. Either way, this is an important record that almost every soul, blues, Otis Redding or 45 collection is missing. Here’s a chance to fill that hole in your record collection. With the amount I am asking for it, I would prefer to ship it USPS boxed priority packed with cardboard and bubble warp than send it in a regular 45 mailer.
