1964 MONO R&B British Invasion rave-up!

         THE MANFRED MANN

                               ...USA - Ascot - AM - 13015 -  MONO

Original 1964 VINYL first pressing of very first Manfred Mann Lp ... in glorious monaural ... the rare mono release offers different song mixes from the stereo issue and, as well, contains the big beat mono boom in the production -- way different from the stereo release.

Much like the early Stones, Manfred Mann were ahead of the Yardbirds at this point...Manfred Mann's debut full-length U.S. platter was probably their strongest, and indeed one of the stronger British Invasion albums of the very competitive year of 1964. Besides the smash "Do Wah Diddy Diddy," it contained a number of fine soul and R&B covers. Standouts were the versions of "Untie Me" and  "It's Gonna Work Out Fine," as well as the strong pounding Paul Jones original, "Without You

In fact this first Manfred Mann album holds up even better 44 years on than it did in 1964! There's not a wasted note or a song extended too far among its 14 tracks. The Manfreds never had the reputation that the Rolling Stones enjoyed, which is a shame, because this first album by Manfred Mann is one of the great blues-based British invasion albums; it's a hot, rocking record that benefits from some virtuoso playing as well, and some of the best singing of its era, courtesy of Paul Jones, who blew most of his rivals out of the competition with his magnificently impassioned, soulful performance on "Untie Me," and his simmering, lusty renditions of "Smokestack Lightning" and "Bring It to Jerome." Opens with the up beat raver "Diddy Wah Diddy" which hit the charts, a year or more later the very first release by Captain Beefheart & Magic Band. This scarce stereo mix of the album (which never surfaced officially in England until a late 90's cd release) holds up very nicely, with sharp separation between the channels.
