GUESS WHO?
Till We Kissed / Shakin' All Over
Canada Quality 1691 DJ Advance (1965) SAMPLE ♫
In 1965, when five lads from Winnipeg, known locally as Chad Allan & the Expressions, recorded a cover version of the British hit Shakin' All Over, Quality Records V.P. George Struth pinned his hopes on a marketing ploy. This was a rare and peculiar move for two reasons; 1) Quality did not generally make DJ pressings, 2) Quality generally did not promote domestic Canadian talent. The story goes that very small batch of these 'Advance' copies were mailed to radio stations across the country with simply "Guess Who?" printed below the title. Quality hoped that DJs would think they were listening to a mysterious new British band and air the song. The record took off and the name stuck - Chad Allan & The Expressions officially became The Guess Who in 1966. This obscure pressing has become legendary among collectors, as fewer than 50 were probably made (even with all the radio stations that played Rock'N'Roll in Canada, that number seems high!) In December, 1964, lacking the funds to return to Minneapolis, the group entered the TV studios of CJAY-TV and recorded "Till We Kissed" for the 'A' side and a song that had been a part of their act for many years called "Shakin' All Over". The recording was credited to the band's new name, "Chad Allan and The Expressions". George Struth, he was immediately impressed with "Shakin' All Over". Fearing that the effort would be dismissed in the wake of British records, Struth came up with a plan to garner some interest by radio program directors . A number of promotional copies were pressed with just a plain white label, the song tile and the words 'Guess Who', implying that the disc may have been the product of someone more famous. His plan worked. Radio stations across Canada picked up on the "mystery record" and it soon began to chart in every major Canadian market. Chad Allan and the Expressions had done the impossible, a Canadian band had the #1 Rock and Roll song in the country. By June, the single had cracked the American market, selling a quarter of a million copies and reaching number 22 on Billboard's chart.
Singer Chad Allan:
"Well, actually the way we got the name Guess Who was through a radio contest. We were the Expressions at the time, and they wouldn't tell anyone who we were and they'd say: Shakin' All Over - guess who this band is. Listeners would phone in and they would win prizes or whatever if they guessed our name. That was during the time of the heavy British Invasion with the Beatles, the Dave Clark Five, Gerry and the Pacemakers... and people would guess The Beatles, and what have you. There was an association there that seemed to stick and we were associated with heavy duty American bands or British bands in particular, and it seemed to me that we kinda passed that local plateau before people had a chance to realize that we were a local band, and boom it was a hit. So that's how we got the Guess Who name... from the radio contest".
