Description
Here is a RARE autographed album from my collection offered up for sale: "Harry James Greatest Hits", released on Columbia, this is a 1967 first pressing on Columbia records CS 9430 Stereo. This one is signed by Harry James himself, plus saxophonist Corky Corcoran, legendary Count Basie drummer Sonny Payne and comedian / actor Buddy Lester!!
Sonny Payne is a legendary drummer who played with Count Basie for 12 years. He was instantly asked to join the band after filling in for Basie's regular ailing drummer. In Basie's biography, Sonny is credited with giving a spark to the band and dazzling the audience and the band themselves. All of Basie's other drummers praise & honor Payne as the man who set the mark! Sonny was Frank Sinatra's personal drummer for all his appearances with the Basie orchestra in 1965-6. Sonny also played with Lambert Hendricks & Ross, Zoot Sims, Illinois Jacquet, The Mastersounds, Russ Freeman and many others. Sonny joined up with Harry James in 1966 and continued until 1979. Sadly, Sonny passed away young at 52 in 1979 of pneumonia after returning from a tour with Harry James to Brazil.
Sax man Gene Patrick "Corky" Corcoran played with Harry James, Tommy Dorsey, Lionel Hampton, Helen Humes and many others.
I found this album in my travels by mere chance and the autographs were on it when I found it. I never sought to have the signatures verified. From my own research I personally have no doubt of their authenticity in comparison with known originals but I am not an expert, so this signed album does NOT come with a COA or guarantee of authenticity, You can compare any of these autographs with known examples of authentic autographs of the artists. Judge for yourself as I have done or get an expert to give them a look before buying.
The cover rates EX, cover is clean and bright, edges excellent, binder edge readable, no splits, no tape, some age discoloration on rear cover. Only a hint of ringwear on front cover, historic signed cover has been well cared for! (see all photos)
The vinyl grades VG, it has lots of marks, has been well played! (if you are looking for excellent vinyl, pick up the sealed reissue I have on my list!)
