It never got any better than this. In 1968, as the Byrds were making valiant (if unappreciated) efforts to bring rock and country music closer together, the Dillards were trying to do some of the same for bluegrass and rock. The result was 13 all-but-perfect tracks mixing some pretty cool music among a couple of unexpected covers (the Beatles "I've Just Seen a Face," and the classic "Reason to Believe"), with arrangements that exude a delicate, subdued lushness and an element of electric rock (courtesy of Joe Osborn on electric bass and Jim Gordon on drums) that worked perfectly. In many ways, this is a finer rural/rock fusion album than Sweetheart of the Rodeo, the first Flying Burrito Brothers album, or The Burito Brothers' efforts during this same period, and an indispensable part of any collection of '60s music
The Dillards first few albums were pure traditional bluegrass. However since the mid-60s they had started to innovate, and were moving towards a more progressive sound. They had toured backing folk-rock band The Byrds, with Dewey Martin on drums (later of Buffalo Springfield), and Doug Dillard had appeared on Gene Clark's first solo album. They were leaving their traditional roots behind and becoming part of the rock scene.  "Wheatstraw Suite" is atruly innovative album in its mix of bluegrass, rock, pop, folk and rural grooves. Similar blends were being made around this time by The ByrdsThe International Submarine BandBuffalo SpringfieldGene Clark and others, but this was probably the first time this country-rock hybrid was approached from the bluegrass angle. The band were joined on various songs by not only bass playing by Joe Osborn, but also with drums from Toxey French (plus Jim Gordon), and pedal steel guitar from Buddy Emmons, but their bluegrass instrumentation remained at the core throughout. Several songs were fleshed out with backing arangements, which added to its commercial appeal. Pederson's presence strengthened the vocal harmonies, and he proved himself a great lead singer in his own right. The material itself mostly consisted of originals being nods to contemporary pop and rock songwriter tunes. The result of all these factors was a pioneering progressive bluegrass album which crossed the boundaries into the then-present folk-rock scene. Today it is looked back on as an influential early example of rural-rock at its absolute finest.    Ill Fly Away  Nobody Knows  Hey Boys  The Biggest Whatever  Listen To The Sound  Little Pete  Reason To Believe  Single Saddle  Ive Just Seen A Face  Lemon Chimes  Dont You Cry Bending The Strings She Sang Hymns Out Of Tune
