Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office.Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has became very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable and will result in blocking the bidder. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our 8000 plus positive feedback. We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery. We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. THE IDLE RACE 1st LP ~ The Birthday Party, contains all six of their British 45 releases from the preceding year. The LP was too ambitious to achieve mass success and was utterly overlooked in the USA. A strange mix of cheerful psychedelic popsike juxtaposed with the ambience of the English music hall and a vaguely suggested dark side, The Birthday Party album top loaded with ultra-catchy melodics though a far cry from the most easily absorbed psychedelia, and it was the most amazing albm that became a commercial failure. It did earn the group critical respect, however, not only from top disc jockeys but also established music superstars -- including the Beatles -- and up-and-coming artists (Marc Bolan among them) also declared their enthusiasm for the Idle Race. Eleven of the thirteen songs on the album were composed by Jeff Lynne and most displayed a simple, almost childlike pre-occupation with weird characters and a lavish production reminiscent of the Beatles Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds type of atmosphere.The Idle Race’s “Birthday Party” is one of the great, neglected English popsike albums of the sixties.
This was Jeff Lynne’s first album from 1968, although he had released some singles in earlier beat era bands. Even at this stage of the game, his refreshing melodies and lyrics were fully developed and realized and as a songsmith he was as superb as Lennon and or McCartney.
The Birthday Party is an unusual British pop album loaded with strange sound effects, buzzing mellotrons, tinkling harpsichords, great harmonies and the like. Lucky Man, I Like My Toys, and Pie In The Sky are joyously trippy, similar in tone to the Blossom Toes great first album, but even better.
The album strongly recalls early Pink Floyd, late 60’s Kinks (just listen to Don’t Put Your Boys In The Army) and the early Move in the best possible way while keeping a strong flavor of originality. Even the ballads, like the heavily phased On With The Show are great listening, speaking of English life and its trials and tribulations. And then there is Morning Sunshine, one of the most beautiful English psychedelic pop ballads ever (ever?)....
