PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING: Please read the entire auction listing, including shipping costs, before writing to ask a question. OUR GOAL IS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. In order to meet that goal, we will ALWAYS work with our customers on any concerns that may arise. In the unlikely instance that you feel the need to open a resolution dispute before working with us, you will immediately be blocked from any further chance to acquire the rare music we present each and every week. Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office. Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has became very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable and will result in blocking the bidder. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our 8000 plus positive feedback. We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery. We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. Something special occurred when John Hammond's powerful vocals, guitar, and harmonica were paired with the legendary Muscle Shoals "Swampers" -- studio musicians who had a magical ability to infuse all their recording projects with a terrific combination of soulful R&B and country-flavored blues feeling. All said, they are just as responsible as Hammond for why this album is a success. The added presence of their frequent guest collaborator, Duane Allman, on lead and bottleneck slide guitar for several tracks doesn't hurt either. If this album were to be recorded today, the production and sound quality would undoubtedly be fuller, but the feel of the players could not be bettered. (sort of a companion piece to Boz Scaggs's excellent self-titled 1969 solo album on Atlantic, recorded in the same studio with all the same people.) A solid rhythm section, tasteful supporting keyboard and guitar work, and judicious use of a potent horn section all yield marvelous results -- plus Hammond's vocals and harmonica work here are knockouts. The raw passion and energy of his performance offset the other musicians' more polished and relaxed approach so that things don't sound too smooth and laid-back.
John Hammond was asked about Duane Allman:
Do you recall the first time you met him?
"The first time I met him was in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. I was down there to record with the band down there. It was being produced by Marlin Greene, and it had Barry Beckett, Roger Hawkins, Jimmy Johnson, David Hood, Eddie Hinton. And when I got down there, they thought that I was gonna be black, and I thought they were gonna be black. So they got pretty cold to me, you know. I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know what to make of the scene. I was told that this was the band that recorded behind Aretha and all these people. So after about two days, we’d cut about four tunes or something. It was not going well.
On the scene arrives this guy with long red hair down his back, eyebrows that crossed, and a mustache that went all the way into sideburns. He was wearing a T-shirt that said “City Slickers” on it. He arrived in this abandoned milk truck. And everybody said, “Hey, Duane! How ya doin’ man?” He said, “Where is this John Hammond guy? I wanna meet this guy! I really dig him.” They said, “You do?” And they all looked at me with new respect. I was introduced to Duane, and Duane said, “Man, I sure dig your stuff! Boy, and I sure would love to play on your record if it’s okay.” I said, “Sure, I guess so.” I had never heard him play before, but these guys worshiped him. As soon as Duane gave me the okay, the session went fantastic. The album is Southern Fried.
This was in ’69. Not long after that, he put together the Allman Brothers Band. They had worked some jobs under the name the Allman Joys before that time. And then the next time I saw them they opened the show for me in St. Paul, in the winter. It was, like, 35 below zero, at the Union Labor Temple there. This was in late ’69, and it was very, very cold. We got together and we had a jam that night, and it was just terrific. It was the beginning of a long relationship I had with him. Duane got me together with the Paragon Agency, and I worked for them for about four years. I was on many shows with them. Duane was at my house the night before he died."
