GIVE HER OF THE FRUIT OF HER HANDS; AND LET HER OWN WORKS PRAISE HER’’-Proverbs 31 “My Choirmaster won’t let me sing my favorite song!" a fifty-five years-old English lady wittingly told me. “Come with me, Lady;’’ I prompted her, “I'll let you sing.” I rushed Florence Parrish to Sonora Recording Studios to see what could be done about this un- fortunate oversight. Grover Dunn, owner and recording technician, listened attentively as Florrie sang all five verses-without words or music—of her favorite song. With a big smile on his face, he told me: “John, we’ll record Florrie on our best—and rather expensive— four-track tape. In this way, Florrie can sing a-capella and you can come in later and add the instruments and vocal backgrounds.’’ I responded, “Sounds great!” “We're rolling,” Grover shouted from behind his glass-plated control room. Florrie’s humorous stories, beautiful English ballads, and soul-stirring hymns were recorded in the next ninety minutes—all on the first take. On this album, all the unwritten rules that have apparently governed the success of long-play albums have been broken. We have mixed religious, country, popular, and patriotic songs together. The se- lections are longer than usual and are unedited. On Side A you will hear what has kept an old lady whose head has been busted five different times and who has very little hair on her head, who has missed five funerals in her immediate family, still smiling. If you listen closely. I am sure that you will discover Florrie’s favorite song. It is worth the price of this album.
