FINAL COLLECTION COPY
Original 1971 first press in thick gategfold, the 46 year old collectible is extremely clean to find with a cover that does not have ring wear. We almost never see such a clean copy but have located what amounts to a collection keeper. NO wear on front cover, rigid & stiff all over, obviously been in careful hands. The back cover has just a mere shade of shelf wear started, hardly anything, just a trace. The back cover is solid blue, no graphics,
The album's melodies, its arrangements and its lyrics are entirely unique. But they are also weirdly, idiosyncratically precise. There's nothing flighty or loose about it. The bluesy vocal trill in "My Old Man" seems inadvertent in its delicacy until Mitchell repeats it, note for note, throughout the song.
It's hard to imagine a song as eerie and discordant as "Blue" being a hit today, much less the song that gives a big release its name.
Has a Canadian winter ever been more effectively evoked in song than in Mitchell's "River"? Has a travel story ever been told with more wit and fun and pleasure than in Mitchell's "Carey"? And, really . . . is there a more gorgeously lopsided, oddly phrased, heartfelt, heartbreaking and somehow perfect love song than "A Case of You"? And, as if that weren't enough, has a song ever been sung more beautifully?
But what most surprised me about returning to Blue was to be reminded of the striking image Mitchell presents of herself in it. The persona of the singer in each one of Blue's songs is an important component of their musical stories.
The young woman who wrote and sang these 10 remarkable songs - so beautiful in performance as the many YouTube clips from this era attest - comes across vividly to listeners. She is strong, independent, smart, funny, sophisticated, confident and passionate. And those characteristics, now as then, are worth singing about.
Joni Mitchell would go on from this '71 recording to make more popular, more ambitious, and more challenging albums, but she's never made a better one. Working with minimal accompaniment (Stephen Stills and James Taylor are two of the four sidemen), the Canadian thrush summoned an involving song cycle of romance found and lost. Though Blue is an uncommonly intimate representation, it's also astonishingly open and gracious. Songs such as "All I Want," "Carey," "California," and "A Case of You" work equally well as poetry and pop music. This is really one of Joni's best recordings. It is soulful and deep, and she allows you to see into her soul here. It is very autobiographical, as are many of her records, but this one got closer to the nerve than many.
She had broken up with Graham Nash (who wrote Our House when they were still together) and was in a relationship with James Taylor. Her trip to LA to see him on the set of a movie was the subject of "This Flight Tonight", and Taylor's heroin addiction and their breakup was the subject of the song "Blue".
Fans are always moved by the song "Little Green", and the lyrics hints to wonder if she had given up a child for adoption. This was strengthened when she sang a live version recorded at a cafe in the late 60s or early 70s, and she sang the last line in the refrain of the song (which was usually "Little Green, have a happy ending) as "Kelly Green, have a happy ending". Years later she revealed that she had given up her daughter, Kelly, for adoption. How painful it must have been to sing that song. This is Joni at her soulful best, with high soaring notes and true emotion in her voice.
