ORIGINAL 1972 PRESSING IN THICK GATEFOLD COVER
DR JOHN'S
"GUMBO"
USA - ATCO RECORDS - SD 7006
BEAUTIFUL, MINT, ORIGINAL 1972 first pressing in THICK gatefold cover ... the LP represents DR John delivering classic New Orleans "GUMBO - STEW" the LP fans and critics declared: "a complete winner from head to toe"
After earning a name for himself as a high priest of psychedelic voodoo, the man baptized Mac Rebennack returned to his New Orleans roots with this 1972 concoction. Gathering tunes and players he'd encountered in his many years as a Crescent City session pro, Dr. John assembled a loving tribute to the city and the sounds he loved. Tunes such as "Iko Iko," Big Chief," and "Junko Partner" have become roots-music standards over the last quarter century in significant part due to this venerable Valentine to the long-lost likes of Sugar Boy & the Cane Cutters, the Spiders, Paul Gayten, and Huey Smith. After a series of albums which presented a unique mix of voodoo exotica and southern Louisiana funk grooves, Dr. John turned his sights on the rich heritage that informed his vision. The resultant GUMBO is a complete winner from start to finish. After a series of albums which presented a unique mix of voodoo exotica and southern Louisiana funk grooves, Dr. John turned his sights on the rich heritage that informed his vision. The resultant GUMBO is a complete winner from start to finish.
Opening with "Iko Iko," which dates from the early '50s, he celebrates many of the prime musical influences of his youth in New Orleans; standards from the Crescent City songbook, with nods to key players such as Professor Longhair, Lee Allen, Huey Smith, and Earl King. He even records his own 1960 tune "Somebody Changed the Lock," as well as "Mess Around" by Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun (originally written for and recorded by Ray Charles). Produced by the complementary team of Jerry Wexler and New Orleans' own Harold Battiste, the music is rife with potent grooves in support of topflight songs. This album is an essential.
OVERALL Dr. John's Gumbo bridged the gap between post-hippie rock and early rock & roll, blues, and R&B, offering a selection of classic New Orleans R&B, including "Tipitina" and "Junko Partner," updated with a gritty, funky beat. There aren't as many psychedelic flourishes as there were on his first two albums, but the ones that are present enhance his sweeping vision of American roots music. And that sly fusion of styles makes Dr. John's Gumbo one of Dr. John's finest albums.
