Bright Dr. George Trautwein, Conductor of the All-State Orchestra, is the Associate Conductor of the Minnesota Orchestra (Minneapolis Symphony). Following his first professional job at 17 as violinist with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, he played with such prestigious orchestras as the Baltimore, the National and the Cleveland, but in 1957 dropped the violin for further studies of music and conducting. In Dallas from 1962 to 1966 as Assistant and Associate -Conductor, as guest with many other organizations con- ducting opera and oratorio as well as some of the most imposing orchestral scores. Dr Trautwein has received en- thusiastic critical acclaim. Committed to creating interest in and love for music through the orchestra. Dr. Trautwein has, during the years with the Minnesota Orchestra, found time to work with young audiences and students throughout the country. He also holds the Music Directorship of the Sioux Falls Symphony Orchestra. Conductor of the All-State Chorus, is presently Director of Choral Activities and Professor of Music, University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He was graduated from Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana. Mr. Neuen has served as conductor of the Indian- apolis Symphonic Chorus, the Indianapolis Maennerchor (German Male Chorus), Director of Choral Activities at both Ball State University and the University of Wis- consin He was assistant conductor of the Atlanta Sym- phony Orchestra from 1970 to 1972. Mr Neuen has been guest conductor with both orchestras and choruses throughout the United States and Canada. Chorale and Shaker Dance (Zdechlik) HARRY BEGIAN Dr. Harry Begian, Conductor of the All-State Band, was named Director of Bands at the University of Illinois. Urbana Campus, m 1970. Immediately prior to this appointment he was Director of Bands at Michigan State University for three years. Before his work at Michigan State he had been Director of Bands at Wayne State University, also for three years. Dr. Begian's work at both of these universities car- ried forward the reputation he earned during his many years at Detroit's Cass Technical High School where he developed one of the finest high school bands in the country. During his last few years at Cass, Dr. Begian headed the Music and Performing Arts Department. Dr. Begian’s musical training was in the public schools of Michigan where he was a private student of Leonard Smith, the well-known cornet and trumpet virtuoso. He received bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Wayne State University in Detroit, and later earned his doctoral degree at the University of Michigan. He organized and conducted his first band and or- chestra while in his late teens and has studied conduct- ing at Tanglewood, summer home of the Boston Sym- phony Orchestra. He has appeared as guest conductor, adjudicator, clinician, and lecturer throughout the United States and Canada. Along with a very busy work sched- ule. he has found time to conduct operatic and Broadway performances, community orchestras, community concert bands, and a church choir.
