One of a nice collection of Classical & Jazz rarities we have just had in, a good selection listed this week.
Original US Issue on the Orinda records label 1978 limited edition Audiophile Direct to Disc Diahann Carroll sings with the Ellington Orchestra under Mercer Ellington, a tribute to Ethel Waters. Duke and Ethel Performed together at the Cotton Club in the 1930's, but there is more than a hint of the new wine in old bottles, as the band swings in a modern way when they let loose. Carroll has a lovely voice.
The audio bandwidth here goes to the limits of most cartridges, and the Direct to disc method used here in its infancy in the late 1970's is very impressive. What a lovely voice also, paired with the jazz orchestra with the greatest pedigree ever. Strong contender for the best sounding 1970's (possibly any decade) US pressing I have ever heard. The very nature of the mastering method limits the amount of records available, as there is no repress option, and the labels confirm this was a limited edition 34 years ago. Fortunately it appears to have been played very little at all.
Record in Near Mint condition, plays Near Mint without faults. Sleeve is Near Mint also.
