RICHARD COX - CHORUS Richard Cox, Conductor of the All-State Chorus, is Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. He received his Ph.D at Northwestern University in 1963. Dr. Cox conducts the Chorale and Women’s Choir at UNC, Greensboro. The Chorale has sung along the Eastern seaboard from New York to Tallahassee, including Kennedy Center and the Washington Cathedral and in 1974 the group made a tour of Romania. The Women’s Choir has sung at both division and national meetings of the American Choral Directors Association, and at a division meeting of the MENC. Dr. Cox has served as guest conductor at regional and local festivals in Virginia, North Carolina, Missouri, Virginia Music Camp, North Carolina All-State, and has adjudicated choral festivals in a number of southeastern states. EMIL RAAB - ORCHESTRA Emil Raab, Conductor of the All-State Orchestra, is the Director of Orchestral Activities at the College of Musical Arts of Bowling Green State University in Ohio. In addition to his duties as conductor, Mr. Raab teaches conducting, violin, and chamber music. Before joining the faculty at Bowling Green in 1969, he was Professor of Music at the University of Alabama, first violinist of the Cadek Quartet, and conductor of the University Symphony Orchestra. A graduate of the University of Michigan, Professor Raab was a member of the music faculty and the Stanley Quartet for nine years. During the summer months, he serves on the faculty of the Brevard Music Center in North Carolina where he is head of the String Division, Conductor of the Transylvania Symphony, and concert-master of the Music Center Symphony Orchestra. FRANK B. WICKES - BAND Frank B. Wickes, Conductor of the All-State Band, has been Director of Bands at the University of Florida since August, 1973. From 1959 to 1966 he taught in Wilmington, Delaware and during that time served as State Band Chairman for the Delaware Music Educators Association and became the first band director in Delaware to be accepted into the American School Band Directors Association. From 1967 to 1973 he was the director of the Ft. Hunt High School Band in Fairfax County, Virginia. While at Ft. Hunt his band performed at the 1970 Mid-West Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago. In 1972 the band won “The Prize of the City of Vienna” for first place in concert and marching at the International High School Band Festival in Vienna, Austria. Elected to the American Bandmasters Association in 1974, Mr. Wickes became one of the youngest men ever to be accepted into that organization. In the Spring of 1976, he was selected Teacher of the Year for 1975-1976 in the college of Fine Arts at the University of Florida. In addition to the ABA, he is a member of the National Band Association, the College Directors National Association, Pi Kappa Lambda Music Honor Society, and the Music Educators National Conference. In addition to his band directing duties, he is professor of saxophone and teaches courses in Marching Band Techniques and Instrumental Music Materials and Administration. THE RECORDING This album was taped live from the new Opryhouse at Opryland USA in Nashville, Tennessee with the Mobile facilities of USC Sound Enterprises, p.o. box 11211, Memphis, Tennessee 38111 utilizing Telefunken M-251, AKG C-451, C-414 condenser type microphones via a DBX noise reduction system to a Scully 280-B professional recorder. Tape-to-disc transfer was accomplished “creatively” on a computerized Neumann VMS cutting system with the Quad-Eight transfer control console. The pressings are a pure special compound vinyl manufactured on special modified Swedish Toolex Alpha automatic record presses.
